With coloring, why don't you confine that to a highchair only? He could do finger painting, play dough, crafts, etc. all in the highchair to confine the mess.
Build a tent out of blankets and have a picnic, read stories, make an obstacle course, play hide and go seek, make necklaces with string and cheerios/fruit loops, play blocks or cars, blow bubbles in the bath tub. There are so many things you could do!
If you can get out of the house, see if there is a gym (gymnastics) nearby; they will sometimes have parent and tot drop in times...or go out and splash in the puddles!

My daughter had a lot of fun with play-doh. She wasn't real big on putting things in her mouth though, so you might want to think about that. The two of you could try reading some books. I'm guessing the kid has toys, you could play with those. Let him help you bake cookies, or top a pizza, my girl always loved helping me cook, and she was much more willing to eat something she helped with (she's very picky). Even a simple card game (Uno works great) can help him learn to match colors, shapes or numbers depending on what level he's on with those. Just lay the cards out on the table/floor and help him find the right ones. Works good with an uno/crazy eights type game, or even a simplified go fish (Do you have any Red cards?) Keep it simple and loose. He doesn't understand organized games quite yet, but he will be able to understand "I want to match the red ones!"
Or one of my favorites turn on some music and sing and dance in the living room for hours.
Good luck, and have fun!

I used to be a nanny for a two year old girl and it is hard to keep 2-year-olds attention for that long. The best thing to do is to make a list of any activities that you can think of from coloring to helping him learn how to use a computer mouse to reading time and nap, snacks, lunch. All of it. After you do this figure out about how long you think that these things will take and then put them in a little order and follow it every day, then do the same thing for outside activities and every day mix things up. I know that it will be a little repative for you, but you will be suprised at how much he can learn and how every day he will start to spend a little more time at each activity. I know it sounds silly and that wasn't really what you were asking for, but within 5 months I taught a two year old to use a computer, her abc's, her colors, to write her name, and to use the potty (plus she memorized a few of her books). My philosophy is that kids have a lot to learn and we have a lot to teach so I spend my time finding new ways to make learning fun at any age.

Well it is hard to keep a two year old busy. There attention doesn't last long on one subject. Maybe you could read a book together. You read and let him look at the pictures. There are all sorts of sites that will give you ideas. Just google rainy day entertainment or somethin like that. Good Luck.

Is your place big enough that you could play something like Hide 'n go Seek ? Maybe learning games (if you think he's old enough for that), they have to start learning something, sometime. You will find something. I agree being cooped up inside during a long raing can be boring & eventually make you go stir crazy. Been there when I was around eight years old, camping, five people cooped up in a small trailor camper.

well me and my daughter watch movies or play together with her toys. watchin tv all day is cool with me,but we watch stuff like noggin, animal pl;anet, travel,or leap frog stuff.
sometimes we go to the mall or store. I am not sure if you kid behaves well in public. I never have trouble with my baby and she's going on 2 1/2. Try a place like chuckie cheese,or Peter Piper pizza. Some thing you know they will enjoy.
Also change in scenery will do hit up some museums,or the local library. they have story times and puppet shows. I always sit with her and do almost every activity i can with her.
you may want to earch online or visit a book store for an arts/crafts book.Stuff both of you can do together.
Or go to toys R us and let the little monster wreck shop on all the toys, kinda like the people who come in my store

1. Bake cookies! The smell of fresh baked cookies on a rainy day? Oooh man, that's so good! ( ^ _ ^ )
2. Put on some music, and just dance with your son. Kids like this. They like moving around, this is major bonding!
3. Try out some of your childhood games. Like "hide and seek."
4. Make your own bubble solution using dish detergent, and the two of you can blow bubbles! Just make sure he doesn't try to drink the solution! ( ^ _ ^ )
5. Make shadow puppets on the wall. I use to do that for my cousins. They actually loved it.
6. Read him a story, but make sure you're very animated. Kids like that. Well, whatever you decide good luck!

Here ya' go mom:
RECIPE FOR COOKED PLAY DOUGH
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 cups water
2 tablespoons veg oil
2 tablespoons cream of tartar (makes it smooth)
food color
Cook & stir over medium heat until dough forms a ball on the spoon and is slightly translucent. Knead until smooth. Store in airtight container - doesn't need refrigeration. Baby can enjoy the textile experience of squeezing and pulling, and you can make shapes and forms. Roll it flat and use something to cut out shapes with also.
The nice thing about this is that it won't hurt baby if he eats it---only it makes his diapers look like they've got "goofypoops"!
