Actually the veterinary diet a/d is made from pork. It is used for very sick kitties who are not eating well - high in calories and fat. As a raw feeder I learned from the start that pork is not to be used in a raw diet for cats.
Pork is an expensive human food source too so most pet foods use chicken as it is much cheaper.

um, actually- pork is safe for cats and dogs....SORT OF.
If, for example, you look in science diet dry k/d you'll find pork fat.
Pork should be avoided if you don't know how to use meat safely- so should chicken- and fish!! Pork has the highest likelyhood to contain trichinosis (a form of parasite) and one of the highest potential for choking with the bones (pork chops- yep really), fish bones are a choking hazard too...as are chicken bones. Chicken is also a disease risk- hmmmm.
be careful when doing BARF diets for your cats- learn how to do them correctly! If you know how, they're excellent! If you don't, well, don't!
Some great food choices for your kitty are out there- commercial diets are full of carbohydrates (cat's are carnivores- they don't need all of those carbohydrates!) so feed them protein.
Innova Evo, Wellness, Wysong, Chicken Soup for the Cat lovers Soul- they are wonderful and good for your kitty.

I have a feeling it's because pork has been known to carry intestinal parasites, more so than beef or poultry. The main concern is not feeding pork raw. The salt content that is typically found in pork isn't considered healthy, either.
However, pork fat is rich in arachidonic acid, an amino acid, that is essential to cat health.

I always wondered that myself. The majority of folks with cats over the age of 25 have always fed the cats sausage (made from pork) as a primary staple. It is no harder for a cat to digest pork than beef unless it's ham or bacon, which has nitrates. I would guess it's because there isn't any leftover product from pork production.
You too can make sausage for your cats. I just buy the store fresh sausage that has the least spice in it and no nitrates, and cook it completely. Let it cool and feed.

No it is not unhealthy for cats to eat pork, many cats love pork. There are many commercial cat foods that contain pork by-products (science diet, for example), and there are a few that contain pork meat.

The longest lived cats in the world-(according to Guiness),lived beyond 40 years. The momma cat was fed a daily diet of uncurred, but cooked ,bacon, eggs and raw brocolli. A daughter of this cat,now 30+years,is on the same diet. I saw this story on Ripleys' believe-it-or-not. I remember few details other than the diet combo.I suspect that the foods where of highly organic quality. I also remember that these cats lived in a very modest environment.

yes it is unhealthy for cats to 'eat meat from pigs' as you say. pork gives them an upset stomach, from experiance, my cat pinched my joint of cooked pork off the kitchen counter and he was being sick and had the runs for three days his coat went all dull too. apparently it has too much fat for a cats stomach to digest, i dont know if thats true or not but i do know how poorly my cat was, hope ive helpedxxxx

Well most of the cats that I have had over my lifetime do not like pork. I have tried to give them bites when I am eating cause they are always begging most of them anyway and they won't eat it. I think most cats don't like pork.

Pork is known to have a high incidence of sensitivity in cats AND dogs (i.e. most cats and dogs are allergic to it). No point in companies trying to peddle it in their petfood therefore.
I just asked a vet this (it's quiet here in the surgery today) and he knew the answer right away. He said he even knows a few humans that are allergic to pig meat.

What's all this about Hills a/d and k/d containing pork? I just checked the ingredients, canine k/d is liver and rice, feline is egg, fish, chicken and turkey. Feline/canine a/d is chicken liver.

No ,they can eat pork meat but fresh not in sheet cat food.
Normal food for the cats is all kinds fresh meat.
But in oven or boiled.
Cat food making cats life too short.
Normally they live 20-25 years.
With cat food no more than 5-7 years.
Believe me I have at home 15 cats.
