I was just answering the question, "how do we get more diversity in church?"

came across this answer from Father K, so i copy and pasted it for you to judge.

"What kind of "diversity"? Diversity of doctrine, diversity of thought, diversity of religious practice, diversity of creeds? They already have something like that called the "Episcopal Church" - and it's self-destructing right before our eyes!

"Diversity for diversity's sake" is poison"

End Quote! Doesn't that sound like something Hitler would have said? Its ridiculous opinions like this that stem hate and create voids in our communities. I believe diversity is the greatest thing you can have, the more points of view, information, you have the more educated your choices would be able to make. maybe if the church allowed diversity they would not be struggling to keep people showing up.

What do you think about Father K's statement? the Scariest part is he is a "top contributor" in the religion section.

in math class if only the right answer is given do you ever really learn anything? you need to see the wrong answers and why they were wrong and how to get to the right answer. smae goes for the church, if followers are going to be faced with diversity in the real world why not let them face it in church where the "teacher" can show them the right answer and why the others are wrong.

Funny Suzanne but I dont remember ever reading that God "hates" anything or anyone. thanks for your take though!

My WHOLE problem with Father K's statement is the way he ended it saying DIVERSITY IS POISON. The rest is very tolerable but to call diversity poison without clarifying his definition of diversity is a very blanket statement covering all types of diversity. If that is not his intention then i do apologize. But that statement is so all encompasing that it should not have been said without clarification!

No, Father K is completely correct. But perhaps you don't understand his answer because you don't know what's been happening in the Episcopal Church.

Some time ago, the Episcopal Church appointed an actively gay man in a senior pastoral role (bishop, I think). Not too long ago, it appointed a woman who supports future appointments of actively gay clergy. These appointments underscored a difference of theology within that Church (and indeed, some others as well): whether or not these actions are Scriptural.

Fundamentalist Christians believe the Bible teaches God hates this sin (and all other sins, as well). Just as an active murder or adulterer shouldn't be appointed to such a role, an actively gay person shouldn't be.

However, there are others who disagreed with this position and believe God accepts gays into all roles in the Church.

This has caused an unhealable schizm within the Episcopal Church. So what Father K is saying to you is that this Church has been undermined by the feeling that it "MUST" be diverse, with regard to sexual orientation. This insistance on diversity has resulted in apostacy and injury to the Body of Christ.

Bottom line: we cannot require diversity within our Churches if it violates Scripture. Apostacy poisons the Body of Christ.

EDIT: Asker, God calls homosexuality "an abomination."

Actually, he is right. The question didn't qualify the type of diversity so he addressed the broad sense of it.

What kind of diversity? Doctrinal diversity dilutes the absolute truth of scripture. It's one thing to think freely and critically, but completely another to be so pragmatic as to invalidate infallible truths.

The role of the church is not to make people feel good about themselves; the role is to provide a place to fellowship with fellow followers of Christ, a safe haven for prayer and worship, and a place to learn more about God through the study of His word. Christ died so that mankind can be reconciled with God. At no point is God going to lower His standards and accept something today that last week was called sin. Therefore, while churches will have ethnic, economic, demographic variations, the common denominator should be Christ. Otherwise, you just have a club. And if you want a diversity club, go make one up. Or Join NOW (so long as you're a radical feminist) - gee, guess that's not too diverse now, is it?

Obviously you don't know Father K's character. He is one of the most respected people in the R & S category. (By atheists, pagans, and Christians alike.) I'd say you are overly sensitive.

I also happen to agree with Father K. Diversity is such a code word among liberals. But, if you were an advocate of true diversity, you would embrace Father K's right to say what he did, and be grateful for such a diverse opinion. (Or does diversity now mean "whatever we approve?")

Personally, I think you owe Father K an apology. Your question smacks of "intolerance."

RESPONSE TO YOUR ADDITIONAL: God does hate a lot of things. You apparently have never read the Bible. There are several excellent online Bibles. Just do a search on "God" and "hate" in the search string. You would be amazed at how many there are. Here is one example: "These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren." (Proverbs 6:16-19)

By the way, you just sowed discord among the brethren. Aren't you proud?

He's not off base. Diversity today implies that we have to tolerate more and more to the point of tolerating everything. The church in all its forms does not have to put up with all kinds of things that it has no business tolerating, especially when this word diversity starts introducing immoral things. It has a right to say "no." Let diversity be the mantra of the liberal establishment. We need more harmony and consistency, not more conflict.

Jesus was very adamant about not tolerating sin. People misconstrue his mission as accepting everything and "loving" everyone and everything. But this is not so. He had stearn warnings against people that tolerate wrong and the things against the Father's will.

He's absolutely correct. You are using the word differently than he is. A church has customs and practices, some of which are not intended to be changed. You have a choice in what religion you choose, that IS diversity.

Unfortunately, this word has been used by the multicultural crowd to mean an all inclusive people makes a better culture. And while that's true, it takes something away from the fact we are all Americans, living in freedom, in one culture, in which we have joined together to form the greatest country in history. The entire immigration debate centers around whether people are coming here to assimilate, or are they coming here to set up their own culture.

I think that Father K's statement is very anti Jesus and also a real chop at the Episcopal Church. I guess that Father K is of the Roman Church. Did he learn in seminary that Catholic means Universal. It seems to me that there is some room for diversity there. However other Christians as well as Roman Catholics are refused COMMUNION in their church. These pin heads are the very Pharisees and Sadducee's that Jesus warned about. Brood of Vipers!

Diversity is just another word for compromise in many circles. However, you were not clear by what you meant by "diversity". If you are talking race, then yes, that would be wrong and Paul notes that in the epistles. However, if you are talking doctrine, then Father K would be correct in his assessment.

The church is open to all races, for all are created in the image of God. However, that does not mean that we should let everyone come in and spout their belief system. Then the church would end up like YA R&S.

Actually, Father K. is quite right. I, myself, am very sad to see what has happened within the Episcopal church, as I was raised Episcopalian.
LOL, since you mentioned Math class, I will share with you what I learned in Math class, clear back in the seventh grade....
I learned that a fact doesn't need me to believe it or even to understand it, in order for it to be a fact.
(Unfortunately, Math was never one of my best subjects....give me words, not numbers, please!!)

Diversity is not alwasy beneficial. When you ask a math question in school, thereis only one right answer; giving other wrong answers does not help anything.

Same is true for religion; If you belieev you have the right answer, why would you want wrong answers to be given the same voice and respect?
