They seem to be awfully close in taste and I didn't want to add both to my veg mix (potato, green beans in olive oil and tomato sauce) fearing it would be too strong a flavor. I always use red onion but decided since to use leeks instead. Hope it wasn't a bad decision.

Leaks have a much milder flavor then red onion. You will actually get a milder, slightly sweeter onion flavor with the leak.
You may find you like it better in some dishes.

Leeks have a milder flavor than onions and I use them quite often. My favorite is potato soup. I saute sliced and rinsed leeks in a bit of margarine in my soup pot. Then I add my diced potates and water to cover and cook till potatoes are done. (my seasonings are chicken bouillon, salt, pepper, celery seed, and a bit of garlic.)
Then mix 1 or 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup and a can of milk and slowly add to soup. Heat to simmering. Adjust seasonings. VERY GOOD!

In your recipe, I think they would be great. But onions and leeks are 2 very different vegetables. If you sauteed something in onions for example, you can't use the leeks.

Good luck
