Here is the options I have, my mom has offered to pay for a full college education, I can go anywhere I want, plus pay for a good apartment and get me a car; I am very grateful for this offer. But, I have always wanted to join the military to serve my country. I don't care about the whole Iraq crisis that doesn't bother me. However, should I risk my future or the future my mom is giving me. She absolutely doesn't want me to join, and I understand why. I have been planning to join the local Sheriff Department and one of the deputies who are a retired Marine said I am an idiot if I don't take my moms offer. I even thought about just do two years in the Army then take my moms offer. But, time is a very valuable thing to me, every second counts. I am worried once a do the military and college I won’t have enough time to do what I really want to do which is to be a Deputy Sheriff.

So what I am asking is if you were in my shoes what would you do.

And please don’t give the typical answer “It’s your decision do what you believe”. Really imagine you being in my shoes and what decision would you make; and please tell me why you chose that direction.

I spoke to a judge, and he made a good point since I am all about serving my country; he said “Going to college, getting an education, and spending the rest of your life helping your community is serving your country”. That is what got me really thinking; do you agree with that statement?

Take your mom's offer. Look, law enforcement is still an option in a post-college environment. And besides, the guys that get promoted the most often in law enforcement have bachelor and even masters degrees in things like criminal justice, etc. So, get your degree, trust me - you'll be glad you did. There will always be time for future law enforcement opportunities and they, in the end, will pay far more than without the degree.

I hope you realize how much money your mom is going to spend on you, she gave birth to you for god's sake, give her the respect she deserves, think of this, you may be killed for a no good cause, or you could further your education, live on your own and have a car to drive.....hmmm tough decision..
I say the smartest thing you can do is go to school, i didnt ...I joined the military when i was 17 ,,now i am disabled with a high school education, i made a mistake, will you ....ttfn

There's nothing wrong with either choice, If you always had a desire to join the military I think you should. Its only 4 years and you can experience alot more in life during those 4 years then you ever will just going to college and working.

Yah I agree with the judge, but you can be more effective in a field of what is in your heart. Explain to your mom how much you really wanted to be in the military. Remember, enjoyment and the fullfillment of ones career are the things that matter most.
