This is for a project I'm working on. If possible, please answer with regards to UK laws.

If a mother suffers from a serious mental illness - i.e. schizophrenia, what actions are taken out against the patient and the children? If the mother is unable to care for the children, even though she is married, would social services get involved and take the children away? Would it differ if her husband was the biological father from if he was the step father?

I would appreciate as detailed an answer as possible, thanks!

You need to look this up to get a proper answer if its for a project your working on. I'd only be speculating. I know nothing about U.K. law. Just look it up and this way you'll be positive that your answer is correct.

i suffer from mental illness.if the person cant look after them selves or others around them.then that person depending on how ill they are would be sectioned of to a hospital for a treatment programe.the children depending on age could possible go to the father.but yes that would be up to the social service.i advise you to let the doctor know so the mum can get herself treated as the longer you leave get help the worse it will be,

yes social services would become involved, and someone from the family should find out about the father before any action is taken , they will do all they can to keep the family together.

my sister suffers with mental illness and she has deteriorated over the years, she is in section now and theres not much chance of her getting out because she is a danger to herself and others...her son (my nephew) has endured some really cruel blows in the past and no longer wants any contact with her, so he moved in with his gran (my mother).....he is 16 now but throughout his life he's been dealt a bad hand with my sister's behaviour, she used to beat him on a daily basis and emotionally hurt him...he never told any of us about it, i noticed a change in her 10 years ago and had something done about it after she set her OWN home alight with my nephew in it, she tried to blame the neighbous but we could see it was her own sick work....she was dianosed with paranoid schizophrenia and phsychosis, they let her out on day release but she is assisted where ever she goes, she is not alloowed to see my nephew, his gran will not allow it and neither will i, she is dangerous, even though she is on meds, she still has that evil streak in her and she will do anything to create a drama...even though she is ill, she has brought nothing but trouble and drama into our family...i have cut all ties with her and refuse to go see her or have anything to do with her, i don't even acknowledge her if i see her, she's done way too much damamge to my family, i took take care of my nephew as his friends alienated him because they thought his mother was a (freak) this really hurt him and he was taunted for years, god knows how he mamaged to get through it but he is a stronger kid now....they need educating, i know what it's like to have a family member who has a mental illness and it's not easy, my nephews father is a druggie and we will not alloow him near my nephew, he is a happy kid now...we avoided social services and took my nephew in as our own, but the sis tried her hardest to get SS involved, we made sure that he was well taken care of...he's a bright young man now and does not need authoriies hovering over him, his life is on the up and he's doing great at school...that's all that matters

considering what i know about mental health system in the UK, you would be hard pressed getting any type of help for this poor mother.
