A lot of my FAT friends tell me this. Don't listen. Wear good shoes and run as much as you like. Think about all the marathoners you might have just seen on the Boston Marathon who run much more than you do. :-)

There are studies that show that running regularly does not deteriorate any joints or muscles more than a person who does not run. In fact, running has a lot of health benefits that may increase your life - prevents diseases, sickness, etc. You will only be in pain if you run wrong (bad form) or too hard too fast (will pull muscles). So make sure you know what you are doing and know your body before running a lot.

I have been running since I was 12 and am now 61. I do not look like the average male, fat and out of shape. People who exercise do not age as fast as sedentary people, have fewer health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, declining muscle strength, and obesity. I do not have any pain, except for my eyes not being the same as when I was younger I am closer to being like most 35 to 40 year olds health wise. Keep exercising is you want to have a healthy, long life.

Your buddy is not a doctor I assume. Running is good for the heart and cardiovascular system. You will probably live longer by continually staying in shape. However, you do run a risk of joint pain from all the pounding. Try a different excercise as well for cardio work such as cycling. Cycling has less abuse on your joints. Plus it is good for your muscles to do different excercises. Your buddy must be lazy.

It doesn't mean that you will die sooner, but a marathon and long distance running puts a lot of strain on the body.

If you run and run and run, then yes, you will most likely have some chronic injuries--some of them serious (i.e. chronic hip injuries that lead to hip replacement). But you will probably also be much healthier and live longer than people who just sit around all the time.

if anything running everyday, will keep you living longer. The only thing is as you age, so do your joints and muscles....so yes when you get older you may develop arthritis in you knees, or need a little more time stretching out after a run....but nothing alieve or some asprin won't take care of.
