how come in the book of job he's up in heaven making a wager with god that he can make job curse god? also, why does god let him out of hell and torment people on earth? you can't use the free will excuse either. if you're damned to hell for all eternity, you should be in hell, not on earth. if you get sentenced for murder on earth, they don't let you out for good behavior.

male1905, isn't he in heaven with god in the book of job? if he's in heaven, then he's not in hell. and if he's not in hell at that moment, then he wasn't there for the rest of eternity.

schneb,
Satan owns the earth and is allowed to do his dirty work.
-ok, let's start with this as a given
Satan's hold on mankind via sin was broken at the cross.
-but he was still on earth and allowed to torment people right?
The earth is redeemed to God during tribulation period
-once again, satan, is still around tormenting people.
Satan is cast into a bottomless pit during Millennium period.
-but people were still sinning, and being tormented by satan. how?
Satan is loosed one more time to tempt the nations.
-he wasn't tempting them during the millenium period? who was then?
Satan is cast into Gehenna (hell) forever.
-we'll see about that...

eddie, there seems to be about 3 or 4 different stories answering where satan is from the 18 answers i've gotten so far. maybe you should tell them to go back and re-read their bibles too. or maybe you should and get another interpretation of it.

nancy, sounds too pay-per-viewish too me. and no, there are some murderers who get life sentences with the possibility of parole. and if you're a repeat offender you get sent back. satan's has apparently been a repeat offender for as long as any of us have been here. shouldn't the almighty have done something about it already, in stead of saying, oh i'll give you a little more time to be bad? that's just ridiculous.

Satan was an angel and put in charge of earth. He has never been damned to hell. That is a church teaching but not based on the Bible. He could traverse back and forth between here and heaven as could all the other angels and hence he showed up there in Job's day. When Jesus sat down at God's right hand in heaven (1914), he cast Satan and all those angels (now referred to as demons) out of heaven and they were confined to the vacinity of the earth. They will never again be allowed to return to heaven. Soon, Jesus will turn his attention to cleaning up the earth and at that time he will lock Satan and the demons in a pit of confinement and inactivity where they are no longer able to influence humans in any way. After the 1000 years, Satan will be let loose for a short time and then permanantly destroyed, never to be able to reek havoc on earth or in heaven again.

"Hell" as it is generally perceived does not exist. It is nothing more than the common grave of mankind. Satan is not damned to such a place and neither are the wicked who die.
The book of Revelation, which depicts Satan and his demons being cast to Earth, was a prophetic reference to something that would happen when Jesus assumed the throne of the Messianic Kingdom. (More on that later)
During the time of Job, Satan had not yet been "evicted"; he simply lost the favor and privilege of working for God. You might compare it to a man who loses his job with a company but is still allowed in the building. It wasn't until later (when the Kingdom was established and Satan and his demons attempted to overthrow it) that they waged war (with Michael and his angels), lost, and were cast down and restricted to the vicinity of the Earth. This would be like the man who lost his job and becomes hostile when he sees that another employee receives a big promotion. He is restricted from the building.
The book of Job says that Satan took his station (or something like that depending upon translation) among the sons of God, which would be like the man who was fired returning and sitting at his old desk. The boss asks where he's been, he answers 'out and about', and they discuss what the man has seen while he was out.
God allows Satan to test his servants in order to fully prove that they serve him out of love as opposed to selfish motives (remember that Job was filthy rich, which Satan insinuated to be the only reason he was faithful).
A drastic change in world events along with Bible chronology indicates that the war in heaven that resulted in Satan's being ousted occurred in 1914. Up until that time he still had access to heaven.
(Just JW propoganda? Well, has there not been a significant increase in war, pestilence, food shortages, earthquakes, violence, etc. since then? Check it out 4 yourself...)
The book of Revelation also says that after being bound for 1000 years in the "abyss"/"bottomless pit", Satan will be let loose for a short period so that he and his demons can attempt to mislead perfect mankind. All who bite will be cast into the lake of fire, which symbolizes the second death (from which there is no resurrection). This has nothing to do with eternal torment, it just means that Satan and his followers will be annihilated.

See you're wrong there .Satan will not be cast into Hell until after the thousand year reign of Christ on earth (Rev.19-23).He will be chained during that 1000 years but when it is over he is let loose for a while. Then he is thrown into the final Hell,The Lake of Fire...and that's it ,done.
Right now ,as Jesus called him,he is the prince of this world.Pulling the strings on whatever govt. he can and people he can.Plus he has thousands of helpers.
Read Revelation 13 through the end.

Think about all these spirits, ghosts, and demons that seem to be troubling people here on earth. Weird and scary things happen to people all the time with spirits. Not all bad though. But think about it. If they all, good and bad, can dwell on earth, who's to say that hell is not on earth in a sense? It may not be an "actual" fire and brimstone place as stated. That could be just a figure of speech stating that it's an eternal state of torment and suffering.

The christian heaven and hell are one and the same. Satan had come from walking about all over the earth. How many church buildings are on earth? (Satan rules over false religion).
All the little bet did, was serve to break job off organized religion. Yes, job became an atheist, which was Gods intent.
I used to believe in an "one and only true church", until my eyes were opened.

Satan will be put into his kingdom, hell, when JESUS returns and wins the battle at Armageddon. Satan will be bound and thrown into his kingdom for eternity. Satan has been loosed for a short time to pursue souls for his kingdom. This will weed out those who openly reject GOD and those who are only pretending Christians but in their heart they are not true believers.
Murderers do get out of prison early for good behavior. Good behavior takes time off of any offenders sentence. Good behavior is when an offender has no disciplinary actions against him/her and has completed programs assigned. They are allotted so many days of good time for so many days of being discipline free. Just because they are sentenced to life for murder does not mean they will never get out of prison, it may surprise you to learn that they are eligible for parole in as little as 7 years. Even murderers who are sentenced to life without parole may at some point be released if the law changes.

Hell is the grave.
The fires of hell are symbolic, denoting permanent destruction.
Satan was thrown down from heaven, restricted to the 'vicinity of the earth' where he's really 'raising hell'.
Like a bad kid, Satan still answers to God.

In the Gospels Jesus called Satan the `prince of this world` and that by his death and resurrection Jesus would overthrow him,so it seems that Satan has the ability still of his Angelic nature although greatly curtailed and so it is not at all surprising that he also has this kind of freedom to go where he wants,Satan will be thrown into Hell permanently at the last judgement.

"In yet another question, somebody referred to that devil is the boss in Hell..." * he's improper, * devil isn't the boss of hell, he has no autrhority there, he's not even at hell, devil is loose around the Earth tempiting human beings against God. * Hell runs "below God's administration". The theory of devil working hell is from center a while, no longer from the Bible. That is going alongside with a pink dermis devil with horns and a trident. merely no longer biblical. devil isn't a warden in a "extremely heat detention center", yet a criminal and quickly he would be arrested and locked down at God's prisions. Wardens, prisions are area of a Justice equipment; devil isn't area of it, different than the main wanted criminal, a "customer" no longer the "boss".
