Well, you know, not all of us are able to get up and go do something directly. Some of us are pretty close to broke, too, so cheap is helpful. So here's some stuff you can do here, now, and a lot of it is free.

http://www.doonenicething.com/
Do One Nice Thing has a lot of great ideas that are free, and a lot that are low-cost but mean a lot to those who benefit.

http://theliteracysite.com/
http://thebreastcancersite.com/
http://therainforestsite.com/
http://theanimalrescuesite.com/
The Hungersite, etc. uses advertising dollars to raise money for worthwhile charities, and all they cost you is a click to add to the fund.

http://care2.com/
Care2 is an Epetitions site. Again, a free opportunity to send word on issues dear to your heart.

There are a lot more out there, but this gives you a start. Peace.

Oh, boy, you crack me up....
I was going to say something about 'this should be in the jokes section' but you're right. We do need a good laugh here in Religion and Spirituality every so often.
Thanks, man, you've brightened up my day.
Best joke I've heard in ages....
Christians getting out of their white bread suburban existences and getting their hands dirty...
I've got tears rolling down my face....

Before you all get up on your smug little holier-than-thou hobby horses, God botherers, I do charity work, and not just ten minutes, every six months.
I wouldn't mock your shameful existences if I didn't have first hand experience of the kind of things you'd rather didn't exist.
Hypocrites.

Well, my people happen to be here trusting me to change their diapers and love on them. One is on my lap trying to type the keyboard and other two are enjoying a game of ball.
SO, if I am not fulfilling my mandate to take care of little children like Jesus asks, well...gee what kind of person am I?

Do you walk the walk to, friend or just harp at people who have a voice and share it?

1 Luke 4: 18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
