It depends on your income. If your W2's, Fom 1099's, and/or Form 1098's meets a certain amount, then you need to file a tax return. If you are single (unmarried, not claiming any children) you don't need to file a tax return unless you earned at least $8,450.00.
You should find out if you can claim yourself for personal exemption. If your parent/s is/are claiming you as a dependent, you cannot claim yourself for a personal exemption but you can still claim the standard deduction which is $5,150 if you are single or $7,550 if you are claiming Head of Household filing status.

You only need to file if your income exceeds the filing requirement amounts for your filing status. If you had no income at all, there is no need to file.
