yes, demons are real and so are exorcisms. but the important part that people forget is that if the person is not filled with the Holy Spirit the demon can re-enter the person... and they cannot have the Holy Spirit unless they are born again Christians....

demons can 'cling' to born again believers but not possess them from within. those people need to stay in the word of God, the scriptures and stay praying and talking with the Lord to keep evil off of them

The amount of media attention and "outed" false claims have made this a very heated topic.

Specifically to answer your question, "are exorcisms real?", requires one to understand there is more than one aspect to this.

Do Exorcisms happen? yes they do

Are all exorcisms necessary? no. The tragedy is, there are many shady types seeking money, fame, attention and power who use this very emotional and controversial subject for their own gain, often causing more harm than good in the process.

Are there "demons"? Yes, there are spiritual creatures called Demons as well as Angels.

Do other spiritual creatures try to "possess" people? on very few occasions, a spiritual creature will attempt to possess a creature in this physical world. In order to truly affect the physical world, one must be in or part of the physical world, to some degree or another.
By possessing a living creature in the physical world, a spiritual creature can affect the physical world.

Is it common for spiritual creatures to possess people? No. It requires a great amount of energy for a spiritual creature to possess a physical creature. It is a rarity for an actual possession to occur.

Who can perform an exorcism?

This is the interesting part.

There are religions that have very strict rules and methods on conducting an exorcism. It is not an easy or pleasant situation. It requires a great amount of self discipline and a solid faith in the Creator. Notice I said faith, for you have have many so called "believers" who have much doubt in them.

I hope this has helped.

They can be...but only if the person performing them has been specifically instructed by God to do it to that specific person. Holly wood has a trumped up version of a tender situation that doesn't affect nearly as many people as once did.(say the last thousand years)
People romance the idea of the horror or thrill of seeing a person infused with the spirit of the demonic- thinking that there is some hidden power or influence benaeth the surface. The people who usually are possessed, do not even know it until they start making a choice to leave the ideals or practices that got them there.

Several people on a board I frequent were the subject of exorcisms. Very traumatic for them.

They are real, and they do exist.

No. Even a good intelligent Catholic Priest will tell you that Exorcisms aren't real. Especialy now with all the knowledge we've gained in pshycology. Only a delusisional insane person would believe Exorcisms are real.

i tend to believe in deliverance. Deliverance is a much quicker means of rooting the bad stuff out.
Exorcisms can take days.
but, whether you wanna call them exorcisms or deliverance - i believe they're real.

The movie "The Excorcism Of Emily Rose" was based on actual events that took place in Germany many years ago.

Yes. But not like you see in the movies. No splashing with "Holy Water", no religious icons, just Anointed Spirit Filled Men of God Praying in The Holy Ghost, and rebuking the evil spirit, in The Name of Jesus.

Yes. They are ritually performed by multiple religions.

No, they are not the casting out of demons. Demons, like the deities that allegedly created them, do not exist. An exorcism is entirely an exercise in dangerous alternative 'healing' methodology for mental illness.

Yes they certainly are,I have finished reading the life story of Fr.Gabrielle Amorth who has been an official exorcist in Rome for the past 50yrs and it really makes you sit up and pay attention.
However in the book he states that full demonic possessions are actually pretty rare events and that demonic oppression is much more common these days.
