1: Battery: do the lights come on? And if they do, when you try to crank it, does the lights dim as the engine barely turns over.
2: If nothing is happening, the lights come on, but the engine doesn't turn over, it might be an ignition switch. You could check to rule out the starter by turning the ignition to the on position and crossing the terminals on the starter (Make sure it is not in gear).
Generally you should check the electrical system for starting failures especially if nothing is happening when you try to start it or it is very sluggish to turn over. Battery, Alternator, Ignition switch, Starter. But there could be other things as well, such as a bad battery cable, or wiring harness in the ignition system. If it turning over alright, but will not fire and crank, it could be more to do with plugs, rotor, cap, timing, fuel etc. If your gonna get into maintaining your own vehicle I suggest a Haynes manual, it gives a trouble shooting guide which is pretty reliable. Good Luck

Try to wiggle the battery cables (terminals) at the battery and see if it will start. What are the condition of the terminal ends i.e. corrosion? How do you know the battery is good? Do you know the static voltage (at rest, 12.4-12.6 volts hopefully) and the drop when you are trying to turn it over? If it drops under about 9 volts when cranking/under load, the starter won't be able to pull enough juice to turn over the motor, battery is shot usually in that case. High resistance/loose cables will do the same thing, remember they CONNECT the battery supply to the starter/components, just as important. Pretty basic stuff generally, if that doesn't make sense to who is looking at it you have no choice but have it towed to a mechanic. Throw a voltmeter/multimeter on the battery and check static and load if you have one, that will tell you a lot to start...

It's probably the battery, but without any more information and without looking at the car, how do you expect anyone to know? Call a towing service and get it looked at if you don't know anything about cars.

The steps to check:
Battery - Electricity getting to starter, to plugs?
Gas - Is there some in the tank, is it getting to the carburetor or fuel injection? Filter full?
More info....?

Check your battery cables and make sure there isn't any corrosion, or they aren't loose. The battery could also be dead. Take it to Autozone they will tell you. If not your starter could be bad. Hope this helps.

This is because your engine is old or it must be your petrol tube. your car"s petrol tube is not good which does not allow the petrol to pass through it.
