1.) How is this related to Religion or Spirituality?
2.) No, they probably really think they *are* better. Some people really ARE just "better" than others (i.e. more intelligent and better looking, etc.). Note that religious teaching usually despises this concept, but it exists in society.
3.) People who really ARE bigger than others (i.e. fat) usually have low self esteem.

The concept you describe is what people tell themselves to get through their day, if they do not meet society's "standards" and have others remind them of that.

Absolutely. People who feel unimportant, unloved, and don't like themselves make themselves feel better by finding faults in others and thinking "At least I don't do that....(fill in the blank)" It makes them feel superior to that other person, but unfortately, that superiority doesn't last long, so the person has to find a new person to belittle.

...The middle letter of the word "sin" is "I" and this is the problem here - too much self-focus.

No that's crap I'm big and I love it. I don't really care what other people think of me as long as I'm happy, healthy and enjoying myself. I've got plenty of self respect and love.
