Actually, there was a study that most mistrust in a couple comes from the worry that youre going to be dumped.
The feeling is always present in anyone that has ever been dumped and the cause of the mistrust usually happens like this;
Say one person in a relationship was cheated on in a past relationship and than dumped. So the person they are with does something that reminds them of the person that cheated on them, this could be anything really, and there is instantly distrust.
And vice versa. Say you dated a liar, you find about one thing your partner might have lied about, or you just dont believe them, and bam no trust.
Most problems dont actually come from real lies or real adultery, it comes from baggage, and the more you have, the more distrust youre full of.

Lies, dishonesty, being evasive and withholding I think are the main cause for mistrust. Been there before and had to end a relationship with a person I thought was my soul mate. Very disturbing and hard to do but trust was broken. Without trust in a relationship you really don't have a chance.

I would have to say not trusting yourself. If you cant trust yourself to do what is right in a relationship then how could you trust your mate!
