They are living in the soil in your yard. Once they're there, they're always there. Highway rest stops are other bad places. Usually they lick their paws and the cycle starts all over again.

You did't say what kind of worms but there are several reasons.
Tape worms are spread by fleas. So treat the fleas, threat the worms and keep the dog poop picked up. This helps a lot but if some other animal is in the yard, IE cat, opossum, rat .... it can re infest your yard with more fleas.
Round, hook, and other nematodes are found in the soil and are very hard to get rid of.
Heart worms are spread by mosquitoes and are very serious.
The best you can do is to keep your pets area very clean and ask your vet if there is anything you can treat your yard with.
Good luck.

If they are little bitty worms stuck to his "hiney", they are more than likely tapeworms. The vets typically give one treatment, but you can ask for two doses which is the old school dosing. If they look like spaghetti and are in the poop, that's round or hook worms which means your yard has issues. And if you live in an aprtment complex with lots of dogs around, he could be getting them from the area because a lot of people don't take care of their dogs. Ask your vet for a heartworm pill that also treats all species of hooks, rounds, and whipworms and you will be in a better place.

Your dog has to eat fleas to get tapeworms. It has to ingest the eggs to get whipworms. But round and hookworms can enter the body through the pads of the feet, so treating to prevent is the only way to stop them.

It depends on the type of worm you are talking about. One of the biggest problems is Tapeworms, which are actually transmitted by Fleas... talk to your vet about putting him on a Flea control like Advantage or k-9 Advantex, and the fleas who transmit tapeworms in their saliva will die off and so will the cycle of endless worms.

Also, please be sure to take him to the vet for a fecal check to be sure of the species of worm you are dealing with... there are all different types of medications out there, but you must use the correct one to get rid of certian species (which is why over the counter products don't always work), also, you must use the medication long enough to kill both the adult worm and the eggs which hatch into new adults in a matter of 2 to 4 weeks.

Also, please be sure all fecal matter (from your dog and other animals) is cleaned up daily from your yard... dogs shed worm eggs in their feces and can reinfect themselves all over again through accidental reingestion... also keep an eye on him and make sure he does not go after rodents or rabbits, who often carry worms.

Every time my dog has a bowel movement I pick it up.

Your dog can get worms due to fleas. Your dog needs to be placed on frontline or advantage. Some of these medications are for fleas and ticks. You need to get them off the dog before you can deworm the dog. Talk with your VET.

Dogs can get worms from digging. They can get them also by eating rabbits, mice and other rodents. Keep your yard clean and watch where your dog goes if off the leash.
Pets can get a intestinal infection called Giardiasis from drinking dirty water.

Good Luck

Some types of worm eggs live in the soil. Talk to your vet about putting him on Intercepter of Heatguard plus. These Heartworm preventatives prevent intestional worms. But they must be worm free to start so get a heavy duty wormer and a scedule from the vet...
