For example, if you send the electric company half of what is owed, will they shut you off? Same question for cell phones, cable, car payment. I live in NJ. Are there any places(legititmate) that can assist me in making payments to these debtors and still keep my utilities on and keep my car(which I have no choice or I will owe more than the car is worth and I can't get refinancing) and my place to live? I am $600. short this month because of my husband losing his job and taking a pay cut from another job and second jobs at this time are impossible. Any help would be great.

The electric company will not work payment plans, so I figured if I send something they, couldn't say I wasn't paying anything. The people at the finance co. for the car finally tell me after being 2 mos behind that I can make partial payments. It seems that no one knows the right answer when you talk to different people at different times to discuss payment options/extension. Anyone out there been in my spot and what did you do to fix it? NJ answers only please.

Tried to get a short term loan, but no one will help me right now, and I am considering trying one of those high interests loans just to stay afloat until my husband gets a better job.

In order to get help from the church, you have to be a member of a church and I cannot take their money, there are people way worse off than I am. I asked for assistance once for the electric, but money has gotten even worse, so I have no other recourses that I can see.

Unfortunetely, the creditors don't want to hear anything but when are we getting paid. So what I am going to do is pay what I can and send a letter with it, if they cash the check, then they are agreeing with the agreement. Amanda, I bet that site was amazing, but it is no longer available. Everyone had great ideas, but I think at this point, since I have exhausted every suggestion, I will take my chances and pay what I can. Thanks again.

Well, usually with utilities they will give you the littlest amount that you have to pay so you don't get shut off. It's usually stated on the billing statement. But, when it comes to trying to do it with the rent, I would have to say NOPE, and I'm not sure about the car. Maybe you could work it out with the company and stuff like that, but I've never heard of being able to do that.

Contact you electric company. some of them have assistance for people in your situation. Also, contact the churches in your area. Many Catholic churches (probably others too) will assist you temporarily. As for your car payment. Call the finance company and ask them if you can pay just the interest for one month so that your husband can find a job. Most of them will agree.

Talk to your creditors and explain the situation. You will find that most will bend over backwards to arrange some sort of payment plan from you rather than have the expense of having to take you to court to get the money from you. Whatever you do don't ignore the problem as it will not go away and will only get worse. Most companies will appreciate that you are trying to do something about it...

Good Luck.

He needs to call the hospital billing ASAP. There is help available if you ask. Problem is most people wait until they are in collections, and then no one will help you. On his bill(s) there should be phone numbers to call. Start there, then if they can't help he should physically go to the hospital and talk to someone there. Good luck **Edit. The above answerer is 100% incorrect about the credit check. The 2005 Bankruptcy Reform Act removed this protection for us citizens. Medical bills now are routinely reported to credit agencies and WILL lower your FICO/credit score. People really need to wake up to the new reality. Congress is no longer of the people, for the people. It is of the major corporations, for the major corporations. Truth, the other reality.

I live in the UK, so not sure if same applies, but over here you approach each company you owe to explaining your predicament and usually they are lenient and offer you some sort of payment plan. Good luck.
