Saddles have been around as long as people have been riding horses. If you have ever ridden a horse without same kind of a saddle, even if just a blanket, then you know that horse sweat is very acidy and burns your flesh. So saddles were invented very early.

But the MODERN saddle, with the stirrup ro hold your feet, appeared and the 11th century. The first to make use of it was William of Normandy at the Battle of Hastings. Having stirrups gave his warriors a huge advantage in the battle. They were able to fight from horseback without falling off everything they swung their weapon. Enabled him to conquer England, and his lineage still rules in today.

I think it was the Scythians but when you go back that far it is hard to tell. More important than the saddle itself was when they finally got around to the stirrup.
