I don't know what gun to get!
A M1 Garand with a 1943 reciever and 1950 replacment barrel, 2 throat erosion, 1 muzzle erosion, service grade originally from the CMP store. For $750+shipping.
A Rock Island 1911 (new manufacture) for $300.
A Mosin Nagant 91/30 1943 with matching serial numbers (stamped not electropenciled) and maybe wood, round reciever and the various accsessories for $90 shipped.
Or a Mosin Nagant 91/30 with matching serial numbers (stamped not electropenciled), hex reciever and the various accsessories for $100+shipping.
So which gun? Or combination of guns?
I can't decide!!

Definitely the Rock Island -- good gun, excellent price.
M1 Garand...yes, but the throat errosion bothers me. Still, for $750, that's not bad. If you just shoot a lot and want a cheaply-made gun that puts something downrange, a Mosin Nagant is fun to shoot. Don't forget: they don't really have a safety (in case somebody less experienced will be shooting it.)
Best option: all of them, plus a few!!

Of the above? Go for the 1911. My primary carry is a Charles Daly (I love the balance) 1911A1. Was in the market for a full size, guy at the range showed me the Rock River a few days back, looks like that's my next acquisition.....
I can't comment on the Mosin's, having never had the opportunity to fire one..... But, if it helps, I've never heard anything bad about them.
Far as the Garand, sounds as though you plan to shoot it, save your pennies and buy something in a bit better condition. Corrosion is a head ache.....

M1 Garands are good American weapons, but!! compared to weight and history the Mosin/Nagant has a better reputation. Ammo is cheaper than 30.06 and you can actually buy steel penetrator ammo since most people don't even realize they have it, (yellow w/silver bands on the tip of the bullet). Now, with VT happening I would put your money in a handgun because real soon, you are not going to be able to buy one. Rifles you will always be able to buy.

Get the 1911 while you still can. Second choice, the Garand.

Dont buy guns. If you want to hunt use a bow and arrow, or set traps.
If you want guns for selfprotection you should move.
