The actual exchange of oxygen->carbon dioxide takes place in the capillaries of the alveoli (air sacs). The mouth/nose/windpipe/lungs are all passages that oxygen and CO2 take, and the diaphragm is the muscle that moves to stimulate the expansion and compression for inspiration and expiration.
