I am putting this question in spirituality because in psychology they would say all such contacts are hallucinations. Abraham, Moses, John Smith, Muhammad all had such contacts that are accepted as fact by billions of people. Many people who believe in those contacts might think that a person wandering down the street who claims such a visitation is in need of counseling. I have personally had a few spirit contacts in my dreams. My dad investigates homicides and a few times I dreamed about details involving his cases. When I told him of these dreams he would write down what i would tell him and he says these often provided him with clues or leads. These times are scary but only happen occasionally and always when he's home. He and I have some ability to read each others thoughts and he is always by my bedside whenever I've had such a dream and he wakes me up and kisses me and than I feel better and than I tell him about my dream.

I found all the answers to be enlightening and worthy of being choosen as best answer. Thanks to all of you for affirming that my dreams are valuable and helping me differentiate from a visitation and an hallucination. It's also good to be wary of the messenger as some people pointed out because there are forces of good and other forces that you must be careful of. The idea of testing the spirit seems valid or perhaps seeing if it leads in a good path and makes you feel better or perhaps the other way. You know you are being lead the wrong way if the things asked go against the bible's teachings or you just feel worse after the encounter.
In any case I will let all of you good people pick the best answer.

Scripture tells us to "test the spirits" when they appear to us, based on what we have been taught by reliable sources.
So if a "spirit" tells you to say or do things contrary to Scripture, then you can be sure that the "spirit" is not of God, whether it be "hallucination" or "demon."
Of course, this requires that you KNOW your scripture, but that is another topic entirely.

Generally, after Christ there is no more need for visitation. We live in the dark times when God has left us without any other proof then the natural hope and faith, and the everlasting word (the Bible).
God is speaking loudly by his word and only by this word. We do not have signs and miracles to believe by. We have a Bible.
However, God does mention that there are two future Prophets he refers to as Witnesses, and by them he will speak again, and they will have a lot of power.
I don't disbelieve your account, but I would warn you against trusting in such visitations as it advised within the Bible that certain evil spirits are called divining spirits. Yes, they can tell you the truth or lie about it, but the Bible forbids such things and they are not to be trusted.
I really don't know the difference between the mental aspects and a true spiritual encounter. I'm guessing it would be in how they affect you. Ezekial described it as astonished. John of Patmos was often in awe. You sounded disturbed and even frightened.

I think hallucinations are something that's experienced by people that are under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or are ill in some way. If a normal well person sees things, then it is most definitely a visit by a spirit, ghost, spirit guide, etc. I would say that you are very gifted in a psychic way, and this is a God given gift. I believe people who have this gift should use it to help others, and it looks like you have been doing that. People in psychology try to explain these things in a scientific way, they can't seem to grasp the spiritual realm. I really think you should work on developing it, and using it for all the good works that you can.

If it interferes with your ability to take care of yourself, your job, your family, etc. it's worth taking a look at. Hallucinations are serious business that Schizophrenics battle with on a regular basis and it can affect their daily life if not kept in check. It very much mimics a psychic experience so if you have any history of mental illness in your family it is worth talking to a counselor or psychiatrist. If you are exhibiting any symptoms such as visual or auditory hallucinations, are becoming delusional, or have thoughts of harming yourself or others seek proffessional help right away.

There are no such things as "hallucinations." Assume that all psychic messages are from spirits, but these can be from demons as well as spirit guides. Your precognitive dreams, however, may not be messages from spirits but rather information from your own higher self which perhaps can "astrally project" enough in dreaming to obtain at least fragmentary bits of information which might be helpful to your father.

This is a common question. There is a very fine line between hallucinations and mystical experience. That is because both come from within us at the subconscious level. The person to whom it is happening is not the best judge. This is why religious orders require that you have a spiritual adviser to help do what is called 'discerning of spirits'. This does not mean 'spirits' as in otherworldly beings. In mean discerning between parts of our subconscious.

That is easy. Examine the testable evidence and the progression of logic that convinced the claimer of the existence of a deity. For something important enough to change a person's life, the claimer would surely have this data because extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. If no data is submitted, there would be no reason to contemplate the claim. .

Hello Rebecca, I'm glad for you that you are experiencing good levels of spiritual connection. Also I commend you on your openness about your experiences. Keep it up! As to your question, I have similar experiences and I also have doublts about just who it is that I am connecting to. Let me tell you what I do. If a particular incident is of help I assume it was to someone good. If it increases my understanding of life, myself, or my connections I assume it was God. If it results in confusion or bad feelings, it was someone or something that is trying to suppress the awareness I have. I don't think it's ever a hallucination.
Best wishes and good life to you and yours

You don't need to differentiate! In asking the question, you have demonstrated awareness. The only difference between the two states is found in your own awareness. If you intend and believe that it is possible that you have communication with a guide/angel/spirit and you experience it - you have. What you believe is true ( for you).

One prays for the gift of discernment. Otherwise, all of these things can work toward bringing a message from God. I've had all of them...you know when you know. That's where discernment comes in.
