my husband had broken out with a terrible -- terrible rash on his legs and feet in the last month . Also he has tiny little blood blisters all over his body and great itching. the doctor is telling him that coumadin is not the cause. I beleive that it is the cause. As he's not taking anything different. He has been on this stuff since last june since the suspicion of a blood clot appeared. the doctor even addmitted that it could also be arthrits instead of a clot. the tiny lump is located in the joint of his right knee. He still has the tiny lump.
Can anyone come with a possible alternative? They are telling him that he has to take this for life. which is hard for me to accept as he has not had a heart attack or a stroke. please help us if you can
Thank You

You husband's conditions call for the Homeopathic remedies ARNICA MONTANA and RHUS TOX both in 30 potency, three times a day half an hour before meals and SULPHUR in 200 just one dose on alternative days(3 Doses in Total). No side effects or complications of any kind total relief. And please report back with his progress if you decide to take my suggestion after taking the remedies for three days.
Take Care and God Bless.

I think you have a different problem than the warfarin. If he was going to show signs of an allergy to it, he'd have done so before now.

Did you recently switch soap, or laundry soap, fabric softener, or anything like that? Sometimes something as simple as that can cause problems.

I've been on coumadin (warfarin) for a few years now, and haven't noticed any changes except for occasionally getting cold, and of course, bleeding a lot more if I poke myself.

I'd definitely get an MRI on the knee, to have a definite answer about that.

I've seen these kinds of blisters and things, but the ones I've dealt with are from a circulation problem, not a medicine problem.

Best of luck in finding an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Try seeking a second or third opinion from other doctors. It's not really safe to advice through the internet an alternative medication for your husband, much less if the answerer is not a doctor. Coumadin and warfarin are highly potent drugs and only a doctor who knows your husband's medical history can suggest an alternative. If you want to know if coumadin really caused the rashes, one way of establishing causality is by discontinuing the drug to see if the rashes will disappear, and then taking it again to see if they will reappear. If this is the case, then it is highly probable that coumadin caused the rashes (And you might also want to switch to another doctor because it looks like the current one does not give the slightest consideration of what his patients are telling him.)

I believe, though it is not common, that some people are sensitive to the warfarin. Has he tried Coumadin? Warfarn is the generic for this and there is a slight difference with the fillers used.. The other alternative is a low monicular weight Heparin Injection twice daily. Lovenox if you are in the US, though it goes by other name brands elsewhere in the world. This has other, side affects too. I am on anticoagulants for life and use Warfarin primarily, but have Shots at home for emergency. I Imagine that they are running tests on him and are waiting results? The blood blisters and rash could be an effect of disease. I have Antiphospholipid Syndrome and am a multiple young stroke survivor. On Warafin for life and wake up thankful that there is proper treatment.
Good Luck

I agree with your physician that it is very unlikely that the Coumadin is causing the rash. The time frame does not agree. I don't recall ever having seeing a case where someone developed an allergy to Warfarin months after starting to take it.

It is unclear how this diagnosis and treatment of a knee joint lump evolved. In order to properly answer your question, that is instrumental. If the diagnosis remains in question, it might make sense to obtain an MRI and a consultation from an orthopedist. He/she could certainly differentiate whether you husband has a foreign body or a blood clot in his knee - thus at least confirming or refuting the diagnosis - and that of course would decide if Coumadin is truly warranted.

I think it is very reasonible to want to get a definitive diagnosis, but if it comes out that indeed your husband has a blood clot in a deep artery, then using Warfarin is a potentially life-saving measure (not usually for life, though) - despite the day to day hassle of frequent blood checks and bruising. If Warfarin is truly indicated, there are no reasonable alternatives.

Good luck.

I'm taking 10mg of warfarin everyday and have been for 4 years. Ive had a mitral valve replacement so I am happy to wake up each day they say and the other blood thinners are just as worrying as warfarin except blood will not clot with aspirin or cortico-steroids. I take warfarin and I have had some quite nasty accidents and my blood clotted after a while. I don't take anything except my blood thinner warfarin, beta blocker Soticor, Ace inhibitor Tritace, and Lipitor to fix up my cholesterol. It seems I will be taking them all for life but after seeing a man in the Hospital who had a stroke I have become a lot easyier for my Dr's to medicate.

The doctor had me on coumadin for six months, because of a blood clot after a knee surgery. I had a deep vein thrombosis in the left leg so they put me in the hospital for three days and put me on warafin drip and then put me on coumadin for the next six months. Had to visit the hospital weekly for blood test and then took me off of coumadin and put me on 325 mg. aspirin the rest of my life.

the answer to your question is simple... NO

be thankful he has never had a heart attack or stroke. and if the doctor has advised him to take warfarin, the whole idea is to prevent these. so dont wait for one and then start taking the medication. take it regularly, diligently, and please dont try the on and off technique to see if it is causing the lump.

consult a specialist, an orthopeadic surgeon, for the lump if it still worries you.
