Cold sores and herpes are the same exact thing.
Cold sores are part of the herpes simplex virus, which also includes genital herpes, chicken pox, mono, and shingles.
You can go to your local drug store and get some Abreva, or you can go to your doctor and have them write you a prescription for some antiviral medication. Acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex) are all available with a prescription from your doctor.

cold sores are herpes. There are 2 types Herpes simplex type 1 and Herpes simplex type 2. 1 is the oral and the other is gentital. They are both interchangable in that oral herpes can be found on the genital and gentital herpes can be found on the mouth. They are both pretty much the same BUT they are with you for life. They will come up with stress, too much sun (which happened to me once) and when you are run down.
Get a product called Zorvirax or other equilvalent ones that will work as soon as you get the signs (which are tingling, lips swells before the blister erupts) and the coldsore may not even come up if you get it early enough. I know that some people swear by a product thats in health food shops (i can't remember the name, I think it start with L...but ask in the shop and they will tell you).
It normally takes about 5-10 days for them to go away with treatment.

It just may be herpes. Many have it but it is the simplex 2 one that is the real problem.
Chicken pox is a form of herpes and once you get chicken pox you always have the virus in you system. This can cause the sores on the lips that re commonly called cold sores.
Shingles that many older and some young people get is also herpes and generally affects a person around the wist line and some above and below that.
The very best medicine for these blisters is to use silver nitrate. It burns like you never would imagine for a while but the sore will be gone in a couple of days. I had them a lot when young and used silver nitrate on them.
Simplex 2 also affects the genital area and is contagious. Might be a good idea to have a test to be sure.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

I just answered a similar question with relevant info so ill repost my answer to it here---
"The 2 species of herpes commonly associated with "oral and genital herpes", arent limited to just those areas of the body. It is a misnomer to consider HSV1 as oral and HSV 2 as genital. Either species can infect any dermal region of the body and even other membranes inside the body. If you happen to be infected with HSV-1 genitally, then its genital HSV-1. Genital HSV-1 typically goes undiagnosed in many people as it is often mistaken as other conditions like ingrown hairs or razor burn. Symptoms may be so mild to completely asymptomatic in most individuals that most people never know they have it-- especially if the person had a prior oral HSV-1 infection. The viruses of genus simplexvirus arent STDs per se; rather they are transmitted by any direct skin to skin contact. The skin normally provides adequate defence to viral entry as opposed to the more vulnerable membranes around the mouth and genitals. Moreover, most personal and/or intimate contact occurs in these regions hence the geographic terminology often associated with the viruses. Any infected membrane actively shedding virions that contact vulnerable unifected membranes carries the chance of transmission"
now to answer your question-- If it looks like a pimple, its not likely herpes but theres no way for anyone on Y!A to diagnose your condition over the net. If you need closure and peace of mind, you will have to see a doctor. If you are indeed infected and you and your doc conclude treatment is necessary, you will likely be given a nucleoside analog like aciclovir (or valacyclovir) and maybe docosanol.

there is no difference -they are the same. try using an over the counter med from the pharmacy (ask the pharmacist) and advil or tylenol for the pain. visit your doctor or urgent care for an antiviral med and instructions on how to treat it in the future cuz once you get herpes, it's with you forever and incredibly contagious. keep your hands away from the sores.

this might not be herpes. but if you think it might be, you need to go to the doctor. there is no cure for herpes but there is meds to control it. you need to let your partner know too so they can get checked and if you do have it, and you are a female, make sure, if you plan to have kids, to tell your doctor!!! if you have herpes and you give it to your baby, the baby could end up deaf and have other bith defects
