i know its a living for some people but shouldn't prostituition be banned? we are doing everything we can in our power to stop the spreading of HIV and other STD's...but as long as there are men and whorehouses in the society...it cannot be stopped. These men bring STD's to their homes n thus its a vicious circle tht will go on n on n on. so my question is...should prostituition be banned and raided everywhere to lessen the chance of HIV n other STDs?

Most prostitutes don't want STDs, bad for business.

And what about that illicit affair at the office with a co-worker? What will you do about THAT?

I know in the state of Nevada where prostituition is legal all prostutes have to be checked out on a monthly bases. I know this sounds wild but if prostituition was legal and had to be monitored the STD rates may go down. Just a thought because how many people get checked out on a monthly bases.

If only it were that simple. First of all, STD's were not caused by prostitution and not all STD's are transmitted by prostitutes. Second, prostitution is already illegal in all US states with the exception of a few counties in Nevada. Other parts of the world also ban prostitution. Try to stop it though. It is the law of supply and demand. As long as there is demand for sex, then there will be people willing to make a few bucks by supplying it.

Better education on safe sex practices and higher rates of condom usage among both heterosexual and homosexual persons will help reduce the rate. Never going to eliminate STD's. There will always be a new one around the corner. You just have to try and keep the chances of transmission as low as possible.

I understand your question, but it's a bit simplistic to think that stopping the oldest profession is going to have an impact on STD rates. In the United States prostitutes are not even listed as a risk group for 'HIV'/AIDS. One may find that odd non-drug using prostitutes are not at risk for 'HIV'. In fact this seemingly at-odds situation was noted when the first 'HIV' antibody tests were used back in 1985. [1]

At the beginning of the epidemic it was assumed [2] that prostitutes would be a vector for transmission of 'HIV' into the heterosexual populace. However, this has never materialized. In fact, in reference two the authors wrote:

"The number of sexual partners reported by the [prostitutes] in the month prior to the survey ranged from 1-250 (median 24.5)... For a 1 year period the corresponding figures included 1-3000 (median 175)... More than 1/3 reported having bisexual partners during the previous 5 years. Prostitutes had significantly more episodes of gonorrhea, chlamydial infection, and pelvic inflammatory disease than the nonprostitute [control] group. 1/2 of the 8 prostitutes who had hepatitis B were IV drug users. 76% of nonprostitute partners and 49% of prostitute partners did not use condoms. Despite the fact that HIV antibodies were not detected in these women, the researchers concluded that HIV could spread rapidly within the prostitution population and back into the wider community through sexual contacts and IV drug use."

In fact in Westernized nations prostitution is not a risk factor for 'HIV' infection. This is especially evidence in places like Japan. As in Australia they are at risk for infections like gonorrhea and chlamydial but 'HIV' either does not affect them at all or present in remarkably low levels (as an example from one study, 1 out of 1394). [3,4,5,6,7].

While other STD's were relatively common 'HIV' was not. This argues against 'HIV' being a sexually transmitted infection.

It's not just prostitutes spreading disease. STD's are spreading in every demographic and husbands are just as likely to get HIV from a Denny's waitress as they are to get it from a hooker.

Even if prostitution were to be completely eliminated from the world, STDS would still exist.

And it is illegal in most countries. Some countries have made it legal, and make prostitutes get checked for STDs.

banning prostitution won't eliminate STDs. people get STDs other ways, such as by being unfaithful with people they meet in bars.
