Anyone tried the Tofutti non dairy chocolate icecream? I had some today and it gave me diarrhea, big time. Is there such thing as having an intolerance towards foods containing soya? I had some chocolate milkshake my sis gave me some time ago and it also contained soya, had no idea at the time but that also made me go to the loo BADLY. Anyway, does it have some kinda laxative effect. I saw in the ingredients that it also contained guar gum and some other gum, could it have been that?! It tasted nice at the time (i was craving choc icecream and this was the only kind left at my local store). So do some soya products cause diarrhea for some people? Is this normal? Any input/comments would be greatly appreciated, no laughing please :p

Yes, you can be intolerant to it. I would avoid it if I were you, because you may develop a true allergy to it if you continue to eat it. It always gave me the runs too, and now I am HIGHLY allergic to it. Try some rice dream ice cream-its delicious.

I get the same problem from Tofutti ice creams and I don't have any problems with soy. Consider that the main ingredients are water, HFCS and oil then think about what drinking those straight would do.

Try So Delicious (used to be labeled Soy Delicious) and see if that bothers you. I can eat an entire quart it and not have a problem (other than blowing my calorie budget).

Guar gum and Carageenan are often implicated as intestinal irritants! Locust bean gum also gets the occasional blame (but much less frequently). I'm not normally sensitive to any of these either but if I use Carageenan to make veggie jello I get cramps and the runs.

A lot of folks that think they're allergic to soy after getting the runs from commercial soymilks (like Silk or 8th Continent) are actually being bothered by the (relatively large) carageenan content of the products. Soy allergies normally manifest as hives or asthma after exposure (not the runs). A doctor can test you for sensitivity to soy and if you pass the test you'll most likely find you can use 'raw' soymilk that's made without the food gums. Xanthan gum very rarely causes problems if you're sensitive to gums simply because the stuff is so powerful that very, very little is needed (it still costs more than using larger amounts of the cheaper gums).

Oh, here's a link to So Delicious Chocolate Velvet. Note the total and fat calories are lower than Tofutti

Soy can give you a badly upset tummy.
Maybe wait a week or so and try a soy food with fewer ingredients, like a tofu dish. If you react to that, you may have your answer.
Getting back to the Toffuti, I'd carefully read the label to see if there are any weird ingredients that end in the letters "itol".
malitol, etc or "ose" dextrose, etc. Those two sugars give me an unsettled stomach, as well.
Good luck with feeling better.

Tofu is made from soy"Bean" curd. I would suggest it does cause gas just like pork 'n' beans do. Beans beans the musical fruit. As for getting the runs, you are intolerant to it.

Did you eat the whole tub? I will sometimes get diarrahea if I overindulge.

And chocolate soy milk gives me gas, but I will drink it anyway though it will sometimes send the SO fleeing to the couch to sleep.
