I am in kansas city. I own a studio used during the day for aerobics. And i am throwing a party for another companies launch. Basically a launch party. I am charging $5 at the door. The business has sponsors that are providing kegs of beer that will be free. Do I need a liquor license if the beer is free and technically i'm renting out the space to this business like would happen for a wedding reception?

I worded this question wrong sorry. I am not throwing this party, the new business is, and they are bringing the beer, like byob.

I'm not sure I'd charge a door cover. Just charge an amount to them total, and estimate a number (or limit to a number) of people. At the very least, make some distinction that the cover is for space rental, and that YOU are not providing alcohol. Most likely, you're fine. Also, are we talking Kansas City KS, or MO?
In Missouri: "When Is a License Required?
It is unlawful for any person to manufacture or sell intoxicating liquor or nonintoxicating beer in any quantity without a state license issued by the Supervisor of Liquor Control."
That's from the ATC page FAQ on licensing. As long as you don't sell it, you should be fine.

Basically, the same thing seems to be true on the Kansas side, but the rules are more strict (from what I can tell.) So you should take a look at their FAQ if you're on that side. They have a "temporary license" which might be necessary as they may decide that a cover includes "selling."

You should check with the Kansas City, city clerks office. If they are not the correct office they should be able to direct you to the right office.
Even though the beer is free you may still need a liquor license since it is being served as part of service YOU are providing to the business you are hosting the party for.

:)ive done these kinds of things many times before. The only way the police would come and bust the party would be if they were tipped off or a nahboor called the police because of noise ect. Still, if the police come, you dont have to let them in because like you said your house is not visibale from the gate wich is a good thing. Also dont have anybody by the gate to let the cops onto the property they have no right to enter with out a search warrent, Seriously. The only way they could bust the party is if they see minoros drinking then they have the right to come in and search the party. If you are the legal age to drink and your friends are too, dont worry about the cops but if there will be minors there that have drank anything everybody that is 21+ goes down and goes to jail :( i would suggest to keep the noise level down and keep everyone inside because of the risk of being busted. Your issue is charging a door fee. I'm not sure why you are charging for a launch party. You should charge the company who wants the space a flat rental fee, not per person door charge. You should draw up a rental agreement and check with local authorities to be on the safe side.

I would be more worried about the liability factor than whether you need a liquor license. What happens when one of the attendees gets in a car and kills three people? Who will be pursued for damages? Whoever had the party probably.

You may want to devise another way to collect your cash , at the door creates the image of cover charge associated with the clubs. Contact your local ABC (alcohol beverage control) they will know if you need any kind of temp. permit ect. I really doubt it though. Good luck with your party, I hope all goes well.
