yep, they CAN eat anything they wish. Your question should have been phrased May.
It depends. The most commercial marshamellows on the mainstream market contain GELATIN ( a fatty substance from animals). One would need to find marshamellows not made from that product something like KOSHER ones.

Most marshmallows now (and the "vegan marshmallows" from a few years ago) contain gelatin, so they're not vegetarian.
Gelatin is ground up animal bones, so it definitely is not vegetarian. (Though a lot of people let it slide because they're unaware.)
Marshmellow fluff contains egg whites as a binder, so they're vegetarian but not vegan.
There are vegan marshmellows you can purchase from pangea (veganstore.com) They're definitely vegan.
*A couple of vegan marshmellow companies went under 3 years ago because they used Emes Kosher Jel claimed their product contained no animal products. There was some suspicion and the products were tested in a lab and found to contain animal bones.

Yes it's true. The substance is called gelatin and it is a combination of bone marrow, cow/pig hooves, and something else (lol I forgot what it was). Gelatin can also be found in Skittles (taste the rainbow!), Starburst, and type of gummy candy, and some other sweet sticky junk. And yes, there is a substitute for the marshmellows and the gummies. The new cocoa skittles are vegetarian, and the Skittle in Australia are vegetarian. There are no veg*n Starbursts that I know of. PS- Can you tell you friend about the skittles, starbursts, and gummies (just to make sure he is aware of them. Thanks).

NO! Marshmallows contain gelatine, which is boiled up bones and sinew and things from animals. Vegetarians do not eat animals, therefore vegetarians do not eat gelatine, therefore vegetarians do not eat marshmallows!
You may be unaware but a lot of jelly type sweets (e.g. all Haribo except the halal ones, love hearts, refreshers) contain gelatine. Check the packaging! The same goes for jelly (UK) or jell-o (US). Same thing different name there!
To the person who said they are just eggs and sugar, then you're confusing marshmallows with meringues, which are vegetarian.

Technically, as a vegetarian, I CAN eat marshmallow and marshmallow fluff in that I'm physically capable of picking up either item and putting it in my mouth, chew and repeat if desired. However, as a vegan who does everything within her power to avoid animal and animal products, I choose not to, because of the animal ingredients.

I know for positive that gelatine (jello) the main ingredient in marshmellows is made from the boiled skins, bones, ligaments and tendons of slaughtered animals. Its also found in pop tarts, pastries, some ice creams and yogurts, and in many processed foods. Its also in hair gels and some cosmetics.

Well, I looked up marshmallows on wikipedia, and I got this:
The marshmallow is a confection that, in its modern form, consists of sugar or corn syrup, beaten egg whites, gelatin that has been pre-softened in water, gum arabic, and flavorings, whipped to a spongy consistency. The traditional recipe used an extract from the mucilaginous root of the marshmallow plant, a shrubby herb (Althaea officinalis), instead of gelatin; the mucilage performed as a cough suppressant.
So basically, it should be ok unless you are a vegan because it has egg whites.

NO NO NO - they generally contain gelatine which is ground up bones/skin/leftover bits, so definitely unsuitable for vegetarians.
