In the old days, prior to antibiotics, strep throat was fatal by the infection going down an artery directly to the heart.

There are a few things - ifthe tonsilitis is caused by streptococcus, then antibodies can form to it. The next time you are infected, the antibodies also attack the heart.

The structure of the valve is similar to that of synovial Joints, Hence Beta Hemolytic bacterias find it an east prey for heart valve to attack. (Rheumatic fever)
Similarly strepto/staphyllo coccus can attack any valve if the immune system is very weak.
They can also attack the kidneys, and synovial joints.

If not treated correctly the infection can get into your blood stream and wreak havoc with vital organs.
