The Center for Disease control says that after six months from the day of exposure a test is very accurate. Even at three months, a very high percntage (i.e. 95+%) will test correctly. They see to lower the time span every time I research it. To be totally safe, I would get tested after at least 6 months have passed since his exposure. Still, USE CONDOMS! You never, never, never know what someone it is doing when you are not around!

Usually it's 3-months. You can be tested again around 6-months for *almost* 100% accuracy.

I believe the first two people were answering, how long you can have HIV without having AIDS - which is a completely different question.

Yes, HIV can lay dormant for 7 to 10 years, that's why annual retesting without symptoms or immediate testing with symptoms is so important if you're deemed "high risk".

It can go undetected for ten or more years. This happened to a friend of mine...he got tested about 6 times in a ten year period...it came back negative every time except the last. So sad.
Use a condom.
