if the file name is abc.DAT then how can i read the inside data. Is there any way i can read or get the information from that file?
please help me.

the file is yahoo messanger chat history and only have text in it.

Hey there.
If the file came from a video CD then you are in luck.
The .DAT can be renamed to .mpg. Then the file can be played in normal media players. The compression format will be normal mpeg 1.
Sometimes normal info in the DAT file can be opened with notepad. But not if its oregin is video.
You can also try MS visual studio to browse some od file formats.

.dat files will play in Windows media player
