hi all. last week I developed an infection in my wisdom tooth which spread along my gum. went to dentist on monday after nearly a week of suffering (had it before and it cured itself) and was prescribed metronidazole 200mg 3 times a day. the pain started to die down after 24 hours and it's now 72 hours since I started the antibiotics and am on my last 2 tablets. My gum is back to normal now except for one white looking bit at the back of the wisdom tooth which is sore when I smile widely! do you think this is still infection or just pressure pain? my glands have now gone down after being very swollen and sore. I have an apt for tues to get it out but am worried that if there still is some infection they won't take it out there and then. should I ask for a few more days perscription? thanks!

That should have taken care of it. The problem with recurrent infections in the wisdom teeth is that they tend to get worse and it will not resolve completely until you have the tooth extracted. You should keep your appointment and in the meantime keep the area clean by rinsing it with 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of boiled water. you should rinse at least 3 times a day, especially after meals. This is better than any antibiotic.

Sounds like you are having a hard time healing. Do rinses after meals of warm water with a little salt in it. You can ask your dentist for a syringe to squirt this into the socket sites to rinse the food out. Follow up visits after wisdom tooth extraction are usually free. You should heal on your own at some point but keeping the area clean can speed things up.

Difficult to see through the internet, if the infection has gone:) Try to use some mouthwashes - corsodyl or any other with chlorhexidine amongst the best - it should help as well. Just remember, many mouthwashes contain alcohol and you realy must not drink any alcohol, being on metronidazole. People sometimes can swallow a little bit of mouthwash, if they rinse their mouths while in a hurry.

Sounds like all infection is gone, especially if the glands are down - thats a good sign. Well done. Rinse with warm salt water - works wonders. x

I would ask for a few more days prescription to make sure the infection is totally gone or else they won't take it out.

I think antibiotics continue to work for some time after you have finished the course. They should continue to do their job.I would avoid taking any more as they will still be in your system.
