Well, I can't tell you why people wear them, but I can tell you why I do. I have many reasons, but I'll just list the top five:
1. To show others that I'm a Christian. I know some people wear crosses just because they can, but I wear it as a symbol of my faith.
2. Because the cross symbolizes what I believe Jesus did for mankind. Through His sacrifice, we can ALL be saved!
3. Because He didn't stay dead. If He had not been raised from the dead, I wouldn't feel right about wearing a symbol of the instrument on which my Lord and Savior was killed.
4. It reminds me to pray (though not to the cross! It's only a symbol!), and to remember that God is always with me.
5. And lastly, it's the only jewelry (besides modest earrings and my wedding set) that I wear. It reminds me to remain humble, and not try to show off.

I see nothing wrong with wearing a cross, but some people think of it as idolatry. It is not, unless a person actually worships the cross. Otherwise, we wouldn't be allowed to wear anything at all!

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the bible plainly forbids idolatry of any kind, including the worshipful use of icons such as crucifixes.

(1 John 5:21) Guard yourselves from idols.

(Acts 17:29) We ought not to imagine that the Divine Being is like gold or silver or stone, like something sculptured by the art and contrivance of man

The exact shape of Christ's instrument of death is hardly a central doctrine of the faith, but Jehovah's Witnesses do happen to believe that Jesus was almost certainly impaled on a simple stake, rather than a cross of two intersecting beams. Of course the Romans had the ability to create a cross, and probably did. But ask yourself: why they would have bothered when a simple stake would have worked just as well or better?

The bible most assuredly does NOT offer any proof that the stake was actually a cross of two intersecting beams. The actual facts of the bible may be enlightening to examine...

You may be interested to see how your own copy of the bible translates Acts 5:30, Galatians 3:13, Deuteronomy 21:22, 23, and Acts 10:39. The King James, Revised Standard, Dyaglott, and Jerusalem Bible translate the instrument of Christ's death simply as "stake" or "tree" because the original wording simply does not support the idea that this was more than a piece of upright wood.

It is also eye-opening to examine how the first-century Christians felt about idols of any kind, much less one that glorified an instrument of death.

I am a Christian and I wear a cross, simply as reminder to me of the greatest sacrifice ever of The Lord Jesus Christ for all mankind. I do not worship it, nor is it an idol for me, nor is it a religious icon, it is simply bit of metal in this shape as a reminder, like the WWJD bracelets people wear and so on.

Not all Christians accept that. Some stilll believe in the 10 commandments, that we should not make any graven image of anything that is in Heaven above, or on the earth below. People have always been drawn to things they can see, touch and feel. God still wants us to liveby faith.

I think it is morbid to wear a replica of the instrument of Jesus death... if someone murdered someone you loved, would you feel it was showing honour or respect if people (who claimed to love you and the murdered loved one) started wearing little knives around their necks to remember them?

The important thing was Jesus death- not the instrument of torture that was used to kill him... eeew.... ick.

For the record, Jesus told his followers how to remember him. It was to observe the annual memorial of his death... strangely, not too many professed Christians bother to do that.

The BBC don't like their news readers to wear them. That was proven last year.

Of course it's okay to wear it. It's recongnition of what Jesus did for his people and I think we should remember what was done and why. It was done for a reason and I don't think it does any harm to remind people of this.
