Autism is a neurological condition, primarily affecting boys (4:1 ratio) which results in deficits in social, language, and play skills. It is a spectrum disorder, meaning that there are large variations in severity. It is believed to be about 80% genetic, although this is still widely debated. It can be worsened by poor diet and environment. Early diagnosis (from 2 years of age) and behavioural intervention are very important.

Autism either refers to classical autism, or a condition on the autism spectrum. The autism specturm has the conditions of Asperger's syndrome, rett syndrome, PDD otherwise not specified, childhood disintegrative disorder, and classical autism.
Some characteristics that people with autism spectrum conditions have are poor eye-contact, dislike change, poor social skills, literal interperation of idioms, guilibility, and one interest that they like and know a lot about.
They experience things differently. Some people with autism don't like to be touched and it hurts them. Some may have a very keen sence of hearing. On the other hand, they might not know when they are in pain because they don't feel pain very strongly.
Some classicly autistic kids can't speak.
Despite the negatives, there are people who think of autism as not a disability or disorder, but a culture. There are positives as well as negatives. Some positives for Asperger's and perhaps the other autism conditions are honesty, loyalty, great ability to think in pictures, not having friendships based on sexism, racism, or age, need for things to be fair, and being reliable. Some people with autism are savants.

Autism is a developmental disablity with a wide ranging spectrum of problems from quite mild to very severe. It affects social interaction and learning abilities. An autistic person will see things differently to someone without autism and will often block out some of the sensory input around them by such things as putting their fingers in their ears.

One of my children (daughter) is autistic, which is unusual anyway because usually boys are far more affected by it. She is now 23, lives at home with us, will never be able to live independently, holds down a job as a domestic in a nursing home. My wife and I ran a local support group for years, and belong to the local area Autistic Society. There are a number of really good books to read about autism, try to get hold of 'Loners' by Sula Wolff for a start, anything by Francesca Happe, also anything by Temple Grandin. And talk to parents of autistic children!
