I had mine out when I was about 25. It is worse for adults are the tonsils are more embedded but it will be worth it in the long run. I used to get recurring tonsilitus and throat infections and it's completely cleared up and I've never felt better.

They'll keep you on lots of pain killers immediately after. I had morphine and I have to say, it was pretty good! Then they'll give you pain killers to take home. You can ask for ones that dissolve if you're worried about swallowing tablets.

You'll be signed off work for 2 weeks and you really need to look after yourself. It initially feels like a really bad bout of tonsilitus, but I found it got worse before it got better. You get referred pain, which for me was really bad ear ache. As soon as the pain killers wore off I woke up in agony and really crying. But as soon as I took the tablets, I just fell back to sleep.

At the hospital they said they wouldn't let me go home until I had eaten either crisps or toast, so I just had some toast (drenched in butter so it was softer!!) though they didn't really monitor that.

Make sure you get lots of nice food in for when you get home because you won't feel up to shopping really. Avoid any dairy or chocolate because it's think and gloopy and will coat your throat. You have to keep trying to eat though as this can help prevent infection. I really craved mashed potato and jacket potatoes with loads of butter and I definately think eating what you fancy helps when you're not well.

I got a post-operative infection in the wounds in my throat so in the end was signed off work for 5 weeks. It's quite common and it's not that bad. You just have to take anti-biotics and gargle special mouth wash. By this time you're starting to feel better too, so it's not so bad.

I know it's scarey, and believe me I was terrified, but I assure you it's one of the best things I've done and you'll feel so much better afterwards.

Good luck and try not to worry. Get some good books, good films and magazines in and just realx and get better.

i am 27 and had mine out when i was 21. i must say that as a pediatric nurse i am very envious of hte kids that have it done ond won't remember it! you'll feel like **** for several days but if you are like i was, you have probbly been sick a lot anyway because of the tonsils. i was miserable but i would do it again in a heartbeat simply because i no longer get bronchitis, tonsilitis and all the other "itis's" 20 times a year. good luck with your surgery hope it all goes well.....personal experience...milk products made my throat feel worse as did acidic juices and extreme cold or hot food/drink temps

My aunt was well past her 20s when she had her tonsills out (and this was like about 5 or 6 years ago) and as far as I know she's doing ok since that procedure.
