for few reason, due to head injury or any injury to brain for example head traumas neck traumas or stroke which makes them suffer from dysphagia (which is difficulty swallowing) in this case they cannot take solids, also with age and injuries they have poor dental health which unable them chew foods. With age also they have digestive problems.Also motor control and inability to feed themselves. All these factors prevent them from having solids . They can have either liquid, thick end fluid or NG tube or Pegs feeding. Spartan

Old, sick people stop taking solids because their body digestive system becomes weak. It is not strong enough to masticate the food.

Generally, due to an illness.
Eg. CVA {Stroke}, Dementia, Alzheimers and the fact they have loose fitting dentures.
Dyspagia, is a swallowing difficulty, depending on the damage, they will be put on graded thickened fluids.

Mostly because by that time, they have lost most of their teeth, and becoming physically less active also slows down their metabolism, so chewing and digesting solid foods tend to be difficult for them.

because usually they have had a stroke or tia which makes them suffer from dysphagia which is difficulty swallowing i which case they then have thickened fluids
