No preference. I don´t care if they use CCD, CMOS, LBCAST, Foveon, or whatever else they might have. A sensor made out of twigs and dirt would be fine by me, so long as the camera produced great images.
And all of these sensors CAN produce great images. Check reviews for specific models.

I can't see why Canon would go with CMOS for the Rebel XT if it was bad. They use CCD in all their little cameras.
As long as you make a circuit to deal with the noise CMOS makes it works fine.
I also see some high end pro Camcorders these days ($10,000+) with CMOS instead of CCD.

I prefer CCD sensor because it produce a high quality photo. if I compare between two of these sensor, CCD is better than CMOS and also more expensive. CMOS sensor usually used in almost cameraphone cause it only need low power to operate it. on the contrary, CCD sensor need a great power and not efficient.

One of the reasons is they're cheaper to make. That means that most of the savings are passed along to the customer. If say a t1i had a CCD sensor it could go for $900 instead of $650. That's just an example, I don't know the actual price difference but I do know they cheaper and easier to make.
