Vinegar and water. Scrub it thoroughly and let it dry.
If it smells of vinegar when it's dry, dust the spot with baking soda.

Unless you use an enzymatic cleaner, the odor will remain. Enzymatic cleaners are Natures Miracle and Simple Solution for example. They're a good thing to have on hand for anyone who has a cat because they're excellent deodorizers, too. After you clean it up and it is dry (you may need to drag it outside and let it sit in the sun for awhile), purchase a plastic mattress cover. Then if there are any accidents, you won't need to worry about the mattress. I also use a Mattress Pad, which makes everything a lot more comfortable. I think your cat was wanting to mark the mattress as his/hers. Whatever you decide to use, don't use ammonia because it smells too much like urine and the cat will still come back. I'd also be concerned WHY the cat has decided to mark.

No one here knows what you have at home right now. Carpet cleaning spray might take care of it.

We have a product called Petzyme. You spray it on and it has enzymes that break down the substances that cause the smell.

You could try keeping the spot wet until you can get out to the store.

I've posted links with other suggestions below.

Hi Cat, Get a stream cleaner and go to Petsmart and get one of their pet cleaners you use in a streamer have one of the floor people pick the best and this will save your mattress. Then make your cat sleep in the garage. LOL.

I used to keep Amway Germicidal for stuff like that. It really did a great job.

ummm... gentle soap and water first and use a cloth to get the moisture out again. spray with fabreeze which gets rid of most odors... even helps with skunk odor which is the WORST thing to get rid of.

To ensure pulling moisture out, maybe a light dusting of corn starch over the top would help.
