I have a 2001 Accent and last year the key broke inside the ignition switch and could not be extracted. You are correct it is expensive to replace but I managed to claim the cost on my insurance and only had to pay the excess. Check your insurance certificate and you may find that you can claim this way.

I got a spare key for my 2001 Hyundai Tiburon for about $3 (usa) at a locksmith shop.
