I have it hosted until I see how wide spread it becomes at Godaddy.com

And I think I would be collecting data like names and addresses.

It will be a voting information site on all the candidates with columns on different views on each side.

So you think Linux?

For web servers it has gone from all UNIX in the mid 1990s to mostly Windows by 2000 and now it is being taken over by Linux.

Many people will write to you and emotionally insist on one or the other.

In reality the decision doesn't matter.

I would go with the system you are most familiar with

and

The system that is compatible with the other systems that you use. For example, if you want to connect your web site with a back end database, and that database was developed for SQL server on windows, then you will have less problems if you host the web server on Windows. Also if you develop and test your system on Windows and host on Linux then little incompatibility issue may arise.

There are a whole range of other complicated issues that come into this, but you didn't provide details so I can't comment.

Here are some things to think about

Linux is better because it can run well on low-end systems. If you are setting up your own server then it is cheaper to use Linux.
Linux has a whole range of high quality free software

Windows is easier to configure if you are not a computer expert, and if you are familar with desktop windows, server windows is similar.
Windows has some software systems that can only run on Windows (especially tools from Microsoft).

It depends on how complex, you want your website to be, and what language you are using. If you are trying to make a website with any form of data collection (ex user names, databases, password storage ect.) you would want to use a combination of PHP, and SQL, which are only supported by linux. However, if you want to use features incorporated into front page such as front page extensions you would want to choose a windows hosting. This would also be ideal if your objective is only displaying information to a user, where you could stricktly code in HTML

Yes, then you would use linux. if you are planning on using PHP and SQL i would highly suggest using godaddy. I have used them before to make a website with SQL databases........however if you are asking this question, odds are you are not a computer programmer. In order for you to have users input information with PHP and SQL takes a fair understanding of computer programming.....if you use windows hosting you can use microsoft access to create data bases that interact with front page. this does not take much knowledge of computer programming, but you cannot get a "custom" feel for it.

You should talk to the person that is going to be programming your site for you. You are not going to be able to teach yourself how to set up online data bases with out prior knowledge of computer programming

personally I would go with Linux:

1. more software made available
2. I like apache better as a web server
3. shell access
4. cheaper (my hosting site actually charges more for windows hosting)
5. less expensive if you decide to setup a home system to "test" with, compare the cost of liux/apache/mysql with windows/IIS/mssql
6. more reliable (in my opinion)
7. prefer php/perl/mysql to asp.net/mssql
