My vet once told me that it's best to wait 'til 6 months for a female - that way they know that all of their internal 'lady' organs are mature enough to be 'fixed'; and a male can be done from about 4 months because their 'man' organs can be seen from the outside and are usually fully developed by this age.

The normal age for neutering is from 5 months - usually between 5 and 6 months old. It's only done younger in exceptional cases, as the cat will be a little small to go through the op before then. Also, with males, it is unlikely the testicles will have descended before this age.

Call your vet and ask him. Some will do the surgery when a kitten reaches a certain weight. Others say 6 months to be sure the cat gets all of its skeletal growth. As long as it is done before the cat starts getting any hormone related bad behavior such as marking.

Weight is a factor here as many vets will not neutered a kitten if they are too tiny. It has to do with the anesthetics and their bodies reaction to them. Check with your vet for their recommendation. Most will probably say around 6 months.

Your kitten should be spayed (female) or neutered (male) ideally between the ages of 4-6 months, but can be done as early as 8 weeks of age.
Neuter your male cat as soon as you can as they have a tendency to spray all over the place and once they start spraying neutering doesn't always fix the problem. It may but then again, it may not. Spraying by the way is a way that male cats mark their territory.
"Spray consists of urine mixed with a viscous, fatty material whose extraordinary pungency has been most charitably characterized as ""musky,'' although more colorful terms have also been used. The accepted method of application is for the cat to back up to some prominent domestic landmark, such as a door frame, sofa, or curtain, raise its tail, and let squirt" (The Straight Dope)
I learned this lesson the hard way. I had always been told that if a male cat sprays then you get him fixed and the problem is corrected. The vet taught me other wise and my spraying male cat was not corrected of this behavior with the neutering. He continued to spray so badly that I had to take him to a no kill shelter. I have never forgiven myself for doing it either and I blame myself 100 percent for not getting him neutered as soon as he was old enough.
Neuter as soon as you can!!!!!!!
good luck

That's up to your vet (cat's weight, health, size), but normally - starting at 8 weeks.
At 6 months of age they can already be mature enough to be parents. Even so, 8 weeks, 6 months, 6 years old -- they need to be spayed/neutered.

My vet won't neuter/spay until eventually the cat is a minimum of five months previous and a particular weight (won't have the ability to submit to in suggestions what the load decrease is). She is an excellent animal u . s . vet and has a 'coaching' training. Her interns do a superb form of the spay/neuters under her supervision. She is hesitant to enable them to function on the smaller cats. And to her credit she does no longer do declawing on cats. and he or she refused to crop, dock and get rid of dewclaws on dogs.

Most vets will recommend at 5-6 months. However, if you get your kitten from a shelter they are all de-sexed at 8 weeks.
