Sure kennels are ok. Get one that is big enough for him to stand up in and turn around. Put him some bedding in it. I use a bassinet quilt folded in half and a baby fleece blanket. I wash his bedding once a week and once a month I wash and dry the inside of the kennel. I only put him in it at night and close the gate. I cover his kennel with a sheet, cuz if my guy sees me he whines. The kennel stays next to my bed. I never put him in it at any other time. Now after a year, when 8 pm comes along he goes & gets in it by himself and then I shut the gate. I leave the gate open in the day time and he gets in and out of it when he wants. If company comes with 'noisey' kids he goes to his kennel. It is his safe haven. I never put treats or toys in with him at night because he could get choked and I want him to learn it is for comfort and sleep. It will be very hard to put your puppy in a kennel next year because he may think you are punishing him, so start now. Good luck.

There are several good answers here as to "yes, get a kennel". One thing you want/need to know is that the first 3 nights will be hell. Put the kennel as far away from your bedroom as you can. I put mine in the mud room / back entryway. The first night is the worst, he'll cry for hours. The second night may be half as long. The third night will be better than the other two, but still a headache. If you can make it these 3 days, you're pretty much set. HOWEVER - if you give into his crying and go down to check on him / comfort him, you will never ever ever get a moments peace as long as he's in the kennel!! :) DO NOT CHECK ON HIM!! HE'S OK!!! Eventually he'll learn to like the kennel. Dog's by nature live in caves, holes in the ground, etc. They feel safe when the exit is the only direction of concern. Your dog will begin to use the kennel through out the day as a place to take a nap.. or enjoy a toy. Remember that everytime you unlock the door and let him out of the kennel, he has to go outside. Even if you only put him in there for half an hour.. take him outside. He needs to have it engraved into his mind that even if he really has to go, he only has to wait until you let him out of the kennel to do his business. Also, never let him out when he's whining. He has to be in a calm submissive attitude before you open the door. If you let him out when he wants out, he's trained you.

Definately get the puppy used to it now. My suggestion is a crate, they are open and safe. Many dogs when trained to go in a crate actually like it. The feel safe and secure, it's their bedroom. They are also great for housebreaking. I own a kennel and leave a crate with my little dogs to go in and out at their leisure. Some of them love it. The pup will probably whine but ignore it. Give it something to keep it busy, ie; chew toy, bone etc. I do not suggest vari-kennels as they are closed and make the dog feel more confined. You can buy a crate at petco for a small dog for around $25.00

Yes Yes Yes! Getting a new puppy use to a kennel is very good! It helps the puppy learn denning.. and is wonderful for transporting it in a vehicle.
We had two doggies..... a Chihuahua and a Toy Poodle. Both loved to travel. We had them trained to a kennel.... When we needed them to get into their kennel we would just say "load up" and the would go into their kennel knowing that we would be taking a road trip...

I was a veternary technician for 5 years.
Yes, a kennel is fine as as the dog has enough room to stand up and turn around in.
In fact, it's good to keep your dog in there to learn potty training also. When you are away, put the dog in the kennel.
As soon as you get home, open the door and go STRAIGHT outside with him/her. They learn the process and become almost excited about it.
Not only that the kennel becomes their safe place. Kinda like their own room.
Leave it open and in the same place when you are at home, so he/she will know where it is if it wants to go hide.

i'm no longer a vet yet i favor to be one and comprehend plenty about animals-dogs. i imagine it o.k. to kennel practice. yet considering the fact that she is of their for 6 hours, supply her numerous affection and workout to make up for that factor. Or once you've a fenced-in outside you may have her accessible if you're gone so she will be in a position to run round you gained't might want to fret about workout. in case you don that then positioned doghouse accessible so she doesn't get to chilly/warmth. (and obviously nutrition and water.) in case you retain on with kennel preparation then reward her with treats for being in her kennel and make her imagine that the kennel is a relaxing position to be. Oh yeah and characteristic toys in there to play with. i'd recommend a cage that she will be in a position to easily turn round in too. i wish this facilitates!

It would be good to train him up now , to get ready for the next year. When you stay at your Grandmothers , your puppy will have to adjust with the change , and if u dont get him used to sleeping in a kennel,he will have to deal with the new sleeping change as well..It would b easier to just train him up now.x

Get him trained to it now. It's not as bad as some people think it is. They actually like to have a safe haven to go to .
I used to leave the kennel door open all the time for my one dog...she always wanted to go in there for her naps...

Of course they are.Just put a little doggie bed in there and he'll be as happy as a clam at high tide. leave the door open at first so he can come and goand get use to it. He won't feel trapped. Later, as you travil around he'll know that when you get the kennel out that it's time to go bye-bye and dance for joy. But first, to get him used to it, feed him in it with the door open.

Start him right away. Dogs are 'den' animals so they are very happy sleeping in a crate or kennel. My dogs wander into theirs during the daytime when I am home even.
