Whatever you can afford. If she loves you and isn't materially driven, she will love whatever ring you buy for her.
Before my partner proposed to me, we went to Thailand on holiday, and he got my ring for $69AU, probably would have been maybe $150 here.
We have just picked out our wedding bands and his is $269 and mine is $249. We are happy with that, proposing and getting married are about love and togetherness, not rings.

Tradition doesn't really fit anymore! I hate to say it, cause I'm a stickler for the "t" word! But, it is really about how much you can afford at the time! If you can't afford to save up 3 months salary, then do what you can! If you can afford 3 years salary, then do that! If she is overly concerned with the size of the ring, then maybe she said yes for the wrong reason!
You can always upgrade your stones later, when you have become more financially stable. Most jewlers will allow you to trade in your diamond and only pay the price difference for the larger stone!
Good luck, and if she loves you, she'll be thrilled with it no matter how much you spent! And remember, shop around, jewley has a 300% markup! You are sure to find someone who will be willing to bargain a little and you may surprise yourself with how much you can get for a minor amount of money!

Decide for yourself on what you can comfortably afford, don't go into debt over a ring. Don't believe the hype about it being two or three months' salary; that's simply not true, just marketing ploys by jewellers and diamond merchants. Do some looking around, and see what you can find that you think she might like. The average price guys pay is around $800, but you can get diamonds and gold for $100 and up. Don't worry about the cost - a mature woman understands the symbolism of the ring, and will be proud to wear whatever you choose.

It really depends on what you can afford. When my Fiance wanted to propose he took me to a jewelry store to supposedly get a necklace for his niece, while we were there we look at engagement rings, but just too look. I showed him the one I liked, and then 4 months later, surprise I got the ring. The whole thing was a set up, he just wanted to make sure he got what I liked, maybe you could do something like that, and base the price off of the ones she's picks out.

I would not spend that much on a ring when you can save that money for the life after the wedding. As long as you find a nice ring and you put thought into it she will love it. Try looking on ebay or bidz.com for a nice ring. I got mine there for a few hundred and it is worth over a thousand.
Good luck and best wishes.

The standard is two months salary. If you are in a lot of debt you should consider spending less and if you are doing really well maybe you should spend a bit more. The important thing to remember is the purchase of an engagement ring shouldn't prevent you from paying for housing or groceries.

Spend what you can afford. You shouldn't go into debit for just a ring. The ring isn't the most important thing, its the thought behind it. If she really loves you, she'll be happy with what you give her. Just don't be too cheap. You can always "upgrade" to a more expensive ring later for a special anniversary

It doesn't matter. Whatever you are willing to spend and can afford to spend is what you should spend.
I should warn you though, that I hope this is not a suprise attack proposal and that you two have already talked about marriage a lot and decided that you are getting married. The surpise attack is very disrespectful especailly when you've already bought and paid for the ring and expect an answer right away. Marriage isn't something you took lightly, so give her the same respect!
