John L is correct. Here's an article w/ more details: http://www.bowlmill.com/cgi-bin/bowlmill/faq.html

I've seen the mineral oil used for wooden salad bowls @ Williams - Sonoma, etc.

Always wash the bowl with minimal amount of soap and water. Allow to air dry naturally - away from radiators or sunlight. Pour a little olive oil onto some kitchen roll and rub in. Allow to dry again naturally and repeat the process until the oil does not soak in so easily and then do this again at regular intervals to preserve it.

I have to agree with John L. I've been in the foodservice industry for many years and made tableside caesar salads. The bowl will love you for using foodsafe mineral oil. Another thing that I use at home is garlic, or you can add garlic oil. Pretty much any salad will benefit from a little garlic and the wood actually keeps a hint of it.

Allow the bowl to air dry for a day, rub mineral oil over all the bowl's surfaces. Wipe off excess with a dry paper towel. Store in a cool dry place.

rub a little cooking oil onto it, just drizzle a little oil here and there
then with your finger tips work it all over the whole bowl, then take a paper cloth and wipe off the excess. i,d take some
cellophane wrapping and wrap up the whole bowl to protect from air and dust. it might need a 2nd. coat if it still looks a little white and dry.

Olive oil, if you use it for salads that way you get no conflict of flavours.
They have woodern bowls in Italy from Roman times that are still looking good and still ozing oil.

Use olive oil. Wipe it with a paper towel dipped in olive oil after each washing. Works great!

Buy a bottle of mineral oil at the drug store. Olive oil will turn rancid.
