I realize that there are whole swaths of the country that are (relatively) stable, but since most of the population lives in areas that aren't, isn't it safe to say that the vast majority of Iraqis are now worse off than before the invasion?

While I could give you my views of their feels since I spent 18 months in Iraq as a contractor with the DOD they would be my interpretation of their views. I will submit one thought for your consider however.

You asked in your question if anyone would still seriously argue that Iraqis prefer "freedom" to stability. I would argue they do based on my conversations with the local Iraqi people in the towns I visited.

And...honest now. As an America use "freedom" would you prefer "stability" to freedom if the tables were turned? Or would you fight to protect the freedoms you have always known?

Are you kidding with that question? As though it was their choice... They are just doing their J.O.B., following orders and trying to survive. Some, if not most, do try to contribute in a positive way, but whatever the case they are still targets and have to behave accordingly. Catch 22 maybe, but the bottom line in addressing your question is that "they" did not make the decision to go there in the first place. Their Commander in Chief did.
