Some are genuinely interested in finding out what we believe and why we believe it. I will answer that kind of question until my fingers fall off because the person isn't trying to provoke an argument. They sincerely want to know the truth about Catholicism.

And then there are those who just want to justify their own anti-Catholic bias by asking loaded questions such as, "Why do Catholics worship Mary?" They already know the answer that they want to hear, and no amount of explanation on our part will change their minds.

I may answer a "question" like that, but only because I'm tired of seeing people snipe at my faith. Usually they believe what someone else has told them about the Church and they're not willing to listen to what those of us who have studied our faith have to say.

Most are attempting to draw fire. Setups if you like. I have asked out of curiosity. I am doing a lot of contemplative thinking. I didn't know that people considered them as being so evil. WOW. Some of the differences are I think not interesting to God. The various takes on Hell or purgatory. If you plan on attending, put your focus there, otherwise look up. I am sure that Jesus was humanly in love with his Mom more so than with any other human. He touched no other female. The Bible says that some will have greater treasure in Heaven than others. Perhaps she does have an elevated position. I think that when Jesus left the flesh, he may have lost his preference for her. Can't say, won't dwell upon it. If you worship her, there is a problem. If you petition her to intercede, I don't know. A crucifix for a reminder seems good. If you worship it, not good. The OT is polluted with rituals of God (Holy of Holies). The Catholics know the commandments. They have minds. Not all adhere strictly to the organizations code.

hhmm have no idea about now...

but historically I think they branch out of Catholicsm, and believed that those with talent and "self-interest", and wealthy are blessed; whereas they believed the fate of the poor was already decided by God before they were born and believed they will be condemned in hell. Because of this belief, they wouldn't dare to donate money or help the poor except to tell them that they should work for their own money. They believed in hard work. Protestants actually started Capitalism.
Catholics on the other hand were more generous towards the poor, so I guess they're sort of 2 different religions.

While the Roman catholic church has many members in other countries not to mention the Greek Orthodox church they are relatively unknown to protestants in christian countries. Also catholic beliefs (traditions) are much different from protestant beliefs. While catholics allow conversion to Catholicism they do not proselytize as protestants do.

most people that have answered have pretty much covered it,i would just like to add this possiblilty...

with so much anti catholicism, for example chick tracts etc, i feel some may be compelled to see if the common misperceptions of the catholic faith are what we actually believe. for whatever reason someone is curious, skeptical or other we as catholics should embrace the question(s) with prayer, kindness, sincerity and charity so we may make clear our faith so that our seperated brothers and sisters in christ(and other faiths) will embrace the catholic faith in its whole or merely have more tolerance and a better understanding of it. god bless.

I think the externals of the Church is something very unusual for them. Many do not understand the teachings of the Church. They get to wrapped up in seeing the externals.
We have a lot more in common in belief with a lot of them than what both of us realize. I am not saying we don't have differences.

perhaps they are searching for a different religion. maybe they are curious. or unfortunately maybe their religion teaches them they are wrong, and they want "fuel for the fire". personally I ask alto of questions about different religions because I have yet to find a religion I am comfortable with.
