yes. that was in the old testament.

God reveals which animals-including fish and birds-are suitable and unsuitable for human consumption in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. Although the lists aren't exhaustive, He reveals guidelines for recognizing animals that are acceptable for food.
He tells us that salt- and freshwater fish with fins and scales may be eaten (verses 9-12), but water creatures without those characteristics (catfish, lobsters, oysters, shrimp, crabs, clams, mussels, squid, frogs, octopi, etc.) should not be eaten.

Although God did not reveal the specific reasons some animals may be eaten and others must be avoided, we can make generalized conclusions based on the animals included in the two categories.

In listing the animals that should not be eaten, God forbids the consumption of scavengers and carrion eaters, which devour other's animals for their food.

When it comes to sea creatures, bottom dwellers such as lobsters and crabs scavenge for dead animals on the sea floor. Shellfish such as oysters, clams and mussels similarly consume decaying organic matter that sinks to the sea floor, including sewage.

A common denominator of many of the animals God designates as unclean is that they routinely eat flesh that would sicken or kill humans. When we eat such animals we partake of a food chain that includes things harmful to humans.

In the beginning, when God made all animals they were all considered "clean". However, when Adam and Eve sinned it caused a curse to fall on all the animals changing their nature. That's why when the Law of Moses was set up, God made a distinction between the "clean" and "unclean" animals. When the Law of Moses was set up, their was a curse which came with the Law (including eating unclean animals) But now that Jesus Christ has came and took away the curse which came with the Law of Moses. Now those who are in Christ are at liberty to eat whatever they want to eat. The apostle Paul said all things are good to eat if they are recieved with prayer and thanksgiving, because your prayer will consecrate that which originally was unclean. And there will be no harm at all to you. Also, the apostle Peter in the book of Acts saw what looked like a sheet coming down from heaven with all manner of unclean animals. He heard a voice from heaven say, "Peter, kill and eat". Peter's response was on unclean animals have ever touched these lips. But the voice told him, "Do not call unclean what I have made clean". So for the believer all things are clean for us.

according to the old testament- consumption of creatures of the sea are limited to fish with "fins and scales"- in large part because shell fish are bottom dwellers that eat other fish excrement (they eat the sea garbage) and eels and other types of fish eat other fish or live in less than desirable waters. i'm sure there is a more specific reason, but i'm not sure of the answer at the moment.

There was a rule in the old testament for the Jews to only eat fishes with scales. They were also only to eat of animals with cloven hooves and no flesh of carrion-eaters. This was to make them apart from other nations. In the case of carrion-eaters, it was also a good idea since buzzard meat wouldn't be too tasty.

Yes. It is a fish, but it has no scales. Therefore it is unclean. think about it......it is a bottom feeder fish. its job is to eat garbage.
