i just adopted a cat from the animal shelther this monday. he's the sweetest thing. for the last couple of days, he's been either coughing, choking of sneezing, i can't tell. then tonight while he sat on my lap, he started choking really bad w/ his tongue sticking out. eventually he stopped after 30 sec of that and walked to the litterbox, then afterwards went to eat. is this a cause of hairballs? i'm worried. he's always had a low toned meow / purr, could this be why?

Your cat sounds like he has Upper Respiratory Infection. You need to take him to the vet ASAP for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Many cats that come from shelters or pet shops usually develop UPI as soon as they are brought home. Why? Probably becuase they caught the virus from other cats and the stress of change either made the virus active or lowered the cat's immune system defense a bit. At any rate, you really have to take your kitty to the vet for a wellness check up anyway.

You need to consult with a vet. There's no way your cat can be diagnosed online. Before you do that, however, call the shelter where you got the cat and discuss this with them. They may treat him for free if you just got him. Sometimes when they choke like that they could be trying to cough up a hairball. However, the vet is the best person to ask. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the purr, though.

Bad breath is a sign that the cat is really sick. Throw in the coughing, sneezing and bloody mucus and you have a case of GET TO THE VET! It sounds like you already have an appointment, so I am glad to know you are taking this seriously. It could just be a nasty respiratory infection, or it could be something more serious, like lung cancer. I'm not trying to scare you, but this is why you want to get you kitty to the vet now.

You should have him checked by a vet, especially since he was a shelter cat. It could be hairballs, but there's a really high chance he picked up an upper respiratory infection while at the shelter. Cats get several different kinds of URI, some more serious than others. He really ought to have a full checkup anyway.

Sounds very much like hairballs. Some cats have a hard time getting them up. You can get some hairball medicine at the pet store or try giving it some Vaseline. My cat will lick it right off my finger. Its what the hairball stuff is made from but much, much cheaper, you can also mix it with wet food if the cat won't take it willingly or put it on the cats nose he will lick it off.
If you have never seen a hairball, look for what looks like a poop shaped like a small cigar, no poop smell. If you find one then for sure he has hairballs.

I have a cat that has asthma, really. He was diagnosed by his vet. Anyways, he will have an attack and he will crouch down, start to do a cough like thing, and it will last about 15-30 seconds, and them he stops. Luckily, his asthma is not so severe that I need to treat him with steroids. Anyways, I just keep the windows downs and the house semi-clean, and he does not go outside, and it seems to control it pretty well.

This might be only caused by hairballs.. Feed him butter..it'll be easier for him to cough out the hairball. And his low toned purr might be a sign that he misses his mate.

He may have a form of "kennel cough" since being in an animal shelter or possibly an upper respiratory infection (yes, cats get them too). Either way, get him to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Good luck and many happy years with your newfound friend for life.

i think you should take him to the vet, my cat gets hairballs often but she never has her tongue hanging out unless your cat has a hairball that he cannot get to come up which will cause them to do this, but if he hasnt spit a hairball up by now then i would take him to the vet for sure it doesnt sound right
