I believe one factor is the fact that parents now days can not reprimand their child with out worrying that they may be doing some form of what can be considered abuse so they let nearly everything slide by with no discipline. When A child has no discipline in their life then they tend not to respect Anything at all. In my home state if you give your child a TV to put in their room then take it out for a form of discipline they can call the state and it is considered emotional abuse. Rather sicking i think. I am 22 and i do my hardest not to swear (i do tend to when lets say i slam my fingers in the door). I always say ma'am or sir. I was raised to be very respectful. There is still hope. Just the government needs to but out of peoples lives and how they reprimand their children. I can see real abuse taking the child away but if a kid gets a spanking or something taken away that is not abuse. anyways that is my theory

I myself am a southerner and have gone to over 38 states and there are people in these places that are true ladies and gentlemen... But sadly they are older generations only have i found it in a few younger ones..... But if you want true gentleman go to a truck stop example pilot t.a. or loves..... The truck drivers of America will hold the door for you every time.... They are not rude and hold very interesting point of views.....

we are a very rare breed that have quickly started going extinct. I have traveled everywhere in the USA and state with the nicest, most old fashioned people is Tennessee. I live in S.C. where you will rarly find a nice person. The northern and west coast areas aren't any better. I think it's because more people are stressed out and get a lot less sleep then in the old days.

I've sworn out-loud less than a dozen times in my 35 years. I don't use the Lord's name in vain. I'm polite to anyone I come in contact with. It was how I was raised. My best friend is a perfect gentleman. He opens doors for me and holds doors for others. He's kind to me and never forces his interests or what he wants to be doing on me. In turn, I try to make sure I'm being considerate of him too.

Hear hear.
Unfortunately, our culture has made sluttiness, rudeness, and vulgarity not only acceptable, but amusing and endearing. We cannot expect people to be any better than what they see and hear all day every day of their lives. It's a pity... but it's something that's not likely to change in our lifetime.

I'm a southern girl too and I totally agree. Saying "Yes ma'am and No ma'am" is what I was taught and so I did the same with my children. Now, all these Yankees are moving down south and are bringing their rotten, rude, disrespectful children with them and they pick on my kids for having manners and using them. What is up with that?

on one hand i agree with you, on the other, this is your perspective based on your geographic location. it would be nice to go to a club where people are respectful and full of ladies and gentleman instead of animals.

i dont live in the south but ive visited georgia a few summers ago i was so surprised by their kindness and politeness. whenever someone gossips, curses, uses gods name in vain or is completely disrespectful to someone, or/and throws a screaming hissy fit when they dont get their way, its like nails on a chalkboard... and it drives me crazy, but i never say anything.. now im not saying im perfect but i try my hardest not to loose my temper and to treat people the way i would like to be treated.

There's so little in the U.S., in other countries it's different but you have study their politeness and their norms. Society is just influenced by explicit music/videos, violence, and they abuse the words such as "freedom of speech".
