Ideally - of course.
Realistically - no, America will NEVER elect a godless President. Sad, but true.

This is an AWESOME question. I think that even if we say we believe that people have the right to worship (or not), when it comes to the presidency, we'd vote for a religious person over an atheist. Because atheists are painted as evil, just because they chose a different belief. It's like we need you to believe in something. Even just saying you believe in a higher power is better than saying that you're worm food when you die. Not to say all atheist say that, but that's how I've heard them painted.

Could an atheist be politically qualified to be President of the United States? Yes. Would he or she stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting elected by the voting public, which has a history of backing religious candidates (or seemingly religious candidates), particularly since the swing toward right-wing Fundamentalism in the 1970s? It would seem unlikely.

Yes but he couldn't be a declared Atheist. I believe we have had many Atheist presidents already. Not this fool we have now though. The US constitution says nothing about the President believing in God supertop is an idiot.

The Founding Fathers and the Constitution have been shut down by the Patriot Act. Democracy in our country is dead. Lets' do something about it.

Actually the US Constitution does say a President must believe in God.
Most of the founding fathers were Christians. I don't know why people think they were not, but actually this country was founded on the principle of freedom of religion. In England they were required to be a member of the Church of England.

People are too deluded and superstitious to accept that an atheist would make a fine President. They refuse to acknowledge the mess made by the current one, and he claims to talk to God. Go figure.

According to this poll on AOL 53% of Americans would not vote for an atheist. It's sad but unfortunately that's how it is in this country.

i'm sure we've already elected atheist presidents. they may not have been open about it for obvious reasons, i.e. risking not being elected. look into the history of presidents such as washington and lincoln and you'll see they weren't exactly devout churchgoers.
