One of our devoted Canon users recommended the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (28-135 equiv.) (April 2007-$515) as a good "walk around" lens at a good price.

Not quite as much of a wide angle, the Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (2007-$1,060) is a pretty good all-around lens. This review says, "If I had only one lens, this would be the one."

Excellent general purpose lens: Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Lens (April 2007-$1,140)

I really like my Nikon 17-55 and Canon makes a comparable lens, the Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Autofocus Lens. It's not an "L" lens, but it seems popular.

No one lenses will cover everything. The BEST kind of lens would be Canon's L series. Of course your looking at over $1000 per lens. For a general purpose lens the 24-105mm f/4 L lens by far is the best walk around lens. Theres the 28-105 or the 28-135 IS (if you need IS) for a cheaper price. For low light you probably will need to go into the L series lenses. There is the 24-70mm f/2.8 and it is execption for clear shots.
There are many lenses to fit your need you have to tell use what you need it for. I own two lenses one for general purpose and one for telephoto fast action shots or portraits. One lenses wont do everything you need (99% of the time).

If you have money to burn, go for the sharpest "L" graded lens.
I would get a 16-35mm/2.8L to replace the EFS 18-55mm kit lens that comes with the body.
For mid range, I have an EF 28-135 mm with image stablization. It 's quite good for portrait, indoor, and any low light condition.
For Telephoto, I would recommend the EF 70-200mm/2.8L IS USM if you want to shoot sports or wild life in a far distant.
This one also costs a lot of money --- more than your camera body.

Depends on what you want to do. For macro work a 18x55mm is great. It is also very good for portrait work. A 35x135mm is a good general purpose lens and any thing else is more or less just bells and whistles.

Depending on what shots you wanna take.
The lens you will be using is dependent on what shuttle speed you might have, distance of object and lighting conditions.
