Tendonitis generally hurts until you get warmed up and then stops or does not hurt as much. After you finish working out it hurts again. Do not use heat, use ice. It is slow to heal because of the limited blood flow to tendons. Massage can help. Depending on the severity and location it may require rest to get better.

Tendonitis is diagnosed by a physical examination. A doctor will look for tenderness along the affected tendon and pain when the muscle to which the tendon is attached is used against resistance. The tendon can be inflamed and the overlying skin may be warm and red.

Some tendon injuries are superficial and easy to identify, like the achilles tendonitis, which is located just above the heel of the foot. There are specific tests for specific tendons, but careful pressure testing and movement of the tendon is all that is necessary to identify the tendinitis. Sometimes, X-rays are taken to rule out a fracture, which has similar symptoms.

Rest and icing is the preferred method of treatment. The ice will help to control the inflammation and decrease swelling. By minimizing inflammation and swelling, the tendon can return to its usual state and perform its usual function.

To prevent further injury, you should do muscle strengthening exercises, as well as stretches. However, it is important that you do not begin exercises until the inflammation of the tendon has resolved.

Good luck on your recovery.

If you don't get treatment you will have tendonitis FOREVER !! Get to a sports medicine doctor or podiatrist and get your problem healed - otherwise you will have pain the rest of your life.

Ice before, then stretch good. Ice after, then stretch good.

Good Luck
